This might help for moving around

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/help-with-your-claim/fill-in-form/14-moving-around/

As has been said using the gym is okay if what you do there doesn't contradict what you say on your claim form.

One of our class teachers also does rehab work in the gym with people referred from GPs. Some of those will be on PIP but aren't doing anything that is "against" the reasons they have been awarded PIP.

In the end, PIP is about how your conditions affect you - not just because you have the conditions. I've got scoliosis and arthritic knees (which have got worse over the last few years) but there is absolutely no way I'd score any points for PIP.

When you get the PIP form you do need to look at the descriptors and see how you think you fit them. I get the sense that you feel that as your knee has got worse you should get PIP mobility. It isn't as straightforward as that.

Thanks - but none of the descriptors REALLY apply to my condition - they are way too vague
The only one that comes close is Moving around - but even that is suspect
The rules appear to have been made up by someone who has zero medical knowledge and even less experience
I mean - I could say that I am unable to walk 10 metres - which is sometimes the case - at other times, I can make it over 200 metres !
My knee is not my only physical problem - my spine is also "concave" and I have been diagnosed with scoliosis
When I had my knee replaced - I was not offered any NHS physio at all - so paying for a personal trainer at the gym, was my only option
Will DWP hold that against me - when I go through the PIP conversion process ?

Make sure that personal trainer knows what they're doing or it could hinder your rehab if you're doing the wrong exercises. Did they hospital say why they were not offering physio? You might be better paying a physio rather than a gym?

My PT does know about my knee op and is extremely careful with what I do
From what I saw of the physios prior to the op - I am far better off with my PT

I've had epilepsy since birth thanks, had unsuccessful brain surgery and still suffering seizures every day. hence why I said much of the time!

Sorry _shel I was having a really bad day, my sincere apologies for that.

    No worries ❤️
  • Why would he not? Honesty, perhaps? Or are you advocating hiding all the facts just so he gets his money?

Not at all, what I do advocate is only answering questions when they are asked, my point was and remains why tell them you go to a gym if they don't ask (which I suspect they wouldn't)

I normally do the same - but my GP is aware so if asked would presumably reveal this.,....
But I suppose that unless specifically asked " do you go to the gym ?" - I would be doing nothing wrong ?

    Indeed.

However, to get to that point you will have had to complete the PIP form and provide medical evidence in support. Can you do that?

You don't really seem to have much idea about the PIP process. I suggest you do some reading so that you are prepared for it.

Completely agree that having some knowledge and understanding about the descriptors and what they mean, does help a lot.

That's the reason that I asked for advice !!
I cannot write legibly myself but understand that DWP have the facility to email me a PDF form that I can fill in on my PC ..
