How did my bank get my new address?

I received a letter from Halifax today with a cheque refunding me interest/fees from a long time ago. Completely out of the blue and unexpected.
My question is how did they get my current address? I moved not long ago and this account is still under my old address as its a faff to change and I don't actually have an account with a bank card or loan, just an old ISA now that is closed so it wasn't a priority.
It could be that they send the letter to my old address and the letting agent sent this back to them with my new address so they've reprinted the whole thing but I that to be unlikely as the agent would usually just write the new address and forward it to me directly.
Maybe I'm slightly panicking that the cheque isn't legit :rotfl:

How long ago did you move? Have you updated other accounts with other providers (in Lloyds group or elsewhere) who'd report to credit rating agencies?0

Electoral role update?0

I did update the electoral role, however not from my last address but from the one before that!
I moved about 4 months ago.
I'm not sure which banks are within Lloyds group, I have Santander with my new address, I think my other 2 accounts are with my old address (both unused, one without a bank card).
Edit: I just searched and I hold no accounts with Lloyds group except the old Halifax ISA.0 -
Just reread the letter, they've taken 20% tax off the compensation bit, so could they have got the address from HMRC? Obviously it's updated there as I use my current address in my job.0

The 20% is deducted and paid to HMRC . The banks have been instructed to do this (probably because they were having to chase so many receiving ppi refunds who weren't paying)
Wouldn't have thought HMRC will have given them your address though.0 -
Did you do a mail redirection? At one time RM had a service where they would advise some businesses of your new address, although I'm not sure if that still happens.0

Interesting. I moved a few years ago and put a royal mail redirect on. When I called Sky a month or two later they mysteriously had my new address without me informing them. I always wondered how they managed it, but figured perhaps they got the info from the bank that my DD is taken from. What you say could answer that mystery!0 -

What is it you actually got from them? Interest? A refund (if so, of what?)? Compensation (if so, for what?)?0
