Thanks Matt - I've just tried it on an O2 PAYG, a 'no line rental' & a contract SIM - and in each case she said "... you have not been charged for this call, goodbye!'

The only positive thing about the caller being charged for being connected to an answer phone is that any nuisance callers will be charged

I agree that the BT answerphone is a con - all those lovely minimum charges for BT to collect.

If I don't leave a message, I don't see why I should be charged.

Anyone else get the stupid peole who listen to your entire answerphone message, you hear them huff a bit or tell someone in the background it's an answerphone...then put the phone down?

They get charged AND don't leave a message. Twits!

My daughters on NTL and when I ring her and she's already on the phone it doesn't give an engaged tone it answers immediately so therefore I get charged connection. I hate that, if she was engaged I would ring back but I don't get the choice. When I call her and she isn't on the phone I put it down after 3 rings coz the answerphone connects then and again I get charged
    Thanx

The Orange phone number has been changed to...

    ORANGE----0800 079 5000

Just cancelled my voicemail. Thanks. :-)

Rapido states it's not possible to switch Virgin Mobile voicemail off.

I know that post was a year ago, but I simply called up Virgin Mobile and asked them to allow me to be able to switch it on or off via my phone, that was no problem, and that was done a few years back.

A fried called Virgin Mobile about 4 months back and Virgin did the same for them. Other people I know also on Virgin also had their voicemail set the same to over the last few years.

At one time Virgin Mobile used to state on their website and in their booklets that it's a good idea to switch voicemail off completely when going abroad.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I realised this to my detriment last year. I was trying to get hold of someone in a hurry. Their phone kept going to voicemail because they were engaged. I must have called about 20-30 times. Bill came through with 20-30 calls charged. Mad! But I guess it could have been worse and we know for the future.

It's worth noting that BT's per-minute charged calls are now subject to a 6p set-up charge, so an answerphone answered call could cost now you 9.25p in the daytime - even a few seconds is charged as a full minute at 3.25p.

I still have LR with talktalk/onetel, and they're following suit (as per usual).:(

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
