I know plenty of people who only ring a couple of times before hanging up, real moneysavers!0

The first thing I do with a new mobile is cancel all diverts, it suits me fine and the phone rings until I answer.0

DOWN WITH 0870 NUMBERS. Why should I pay to make an appointment with my doctor or to ask the supermarket what time they open.0

Find alternative numbers, instead of calling premium numbers here:

About voicemail.. Well it also costs a fair deal to retrieve the messages on all networks apart from T-Mobile, which is free! I've always had a thought about these new mobiles and their capabilites to run custom applications and all that. My thought was to have a "Mobile Based" answer machine, similar to landlines answer machines. Instead of the Network providers answer machine coming up after 30 seconds, I thought perhaps a program on the phone could act as the answer machine, and store the message digitally on the phone as a sound file (many many phones are now capable of that!). The advantages then are:
1. No retrieval costs.
2. Messages can be archived, instead of being deleted by the network.
3. Easier and quicker to access - no calling up a number to listen to messages EACH TIME you want to listen, not a one off!!
If anyone could develop that, and it became widespread, it might tell the networks to reconsider their Voicemail charges, and they might drop them or rid them completely!!
Now have a laugh at me if you think im stupid0 -
When I recived my mobile it was set to a very short time before divert. As others have said by the time I hear it, run, dive and dig to find it the call has been diverted. Money for the telco  . I found this though. It allows you to set the time in seconds before your mobile phone diverts. Max of 30 but compared to the 15 seconds that my phone was set to as standard that is heaps. It gives callers extra time to hang up if I have not answered. As long as it is someone I know caller ID tells me who it is.
To change the length of time before call is diverted to voicemail
Key **61*(mailbox number)*10*(no. of seconds in 5 second increments, max.
30 seconds)# Send
:T
On my Sony ericson T610 if I check the current status of the divert it tells me the mailbox number.0 -

That is a network specific DTMF Code (Will only work on some brands, is network specific). Heres some help on various neworks:
o2 - To Turn off Voicemail completely, dial 1760 (PAYG & Contract), dunno if it costs to call!
T-Mobile --> Call 222, follow instructions there!
Vodafone - Call 1213 to completely disable voicemail
Orange - (As more info comes, i'll update here, but it can probably be disabled by calling 123)
3 - (Again, lack of info, Do it by calling 123. Again, thats the voicemail number, must be possible from there!)

I totally understand the logic of 5 ring slam.
However, if someone phones me, it takes me about 5 rings to get to the phone. If they hang up, I dial 1471 to find out the number. Meanwhile, they're ringing me back, and get sent straight to my voicemail. If I'm busy, I may decide to call later and walk back to what I was doing. Under 5 ring slam, they'd ring me back and the whole cycle would start again!
It would drive me NUTS to be on the receiving end!
Let's campaign against the min call rates instead. If it was easy, everyone would do it!0 -
Absolutely agree, voicemail is not only a complete waste of money but time as well.
Let's go one step better and not have voicemail at all - especially if the mobile network you're on charges you for it!0 -

I've tried 1571 but it doesn't work... any ideas?

rapidoTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
