Michelin Tyres - Faulty

Afternoon,

Just wondering if anybody has any experience complaining direct to a tyre company regarding poor tyres and if you were successful?

Interested to hear any experiences.

Thanks.

No direct experience but your first port of call should be to the place you bought them from.

How is the tyre faulty? Does it not hold air?

Go back to the place that fitted them.

Yeah done that! It's just had its first service and they flagged up the tyres, all 4 badly cracked, not holding their pressure. Contacted Michelin who advised seeing an authorised stockist, the information from the dealership isn't sufficient.

Car is just a year old with 4,000 on the clock and tyres are £150 each - a pricey year of motoring!
  • Difficult one, I had a problem with a tyre cracking at the bottom of the tread channels, went back to dealer, paid for new tyre so dealer would send back faulty tyre, lots of chasing up, from dealer to distributor, to get progress.
Eventually got a phone call offering 60% of new price, I refused as the tread was virtually unworn, was told that I had a choice to get tyre back and have it independently assessed, I complained that it was virtually new, distributor had further words and came up with 80% which I accepted. How this helps, the main thing is to take pictures of the fault together with the manufacture date code, so that you can push for a decent allowance. Most importantly, do not drive on them if you feel that they are faulty and possibly dangerous.

Your car might only be a year old, what about the date code on the tyres - when were they manufactured?

Michelin tyres are garanteed until the moment the tyres are worn to the TWI level or 10 years after the manufacturing date, the guarantee of the French manufacturer does not cover tyres purchased 3 years following the manufacturing date

They're trying to tell you that the tyres are losing pressure through the cracks? I highly doubt that. Where are the cracks? Sidewall or between the tread?

I used to work with a chap who was in the trade previously, he informed that a warranty claim to Michelin would almost always fall.

  • We put 4 new Michelin tyres on our car in May before our driving holiday in August.

Like yours, they were pricey good ones at about £150 each - we have an Audi TT and were driving through Switzerland/Austria etc so hubby wanted good grippy ones.

Day 1 and he felt a wheel wobble driving down the motorways, when we got to Zurich, hubby took the car to a local tyre place as he wondered if they hadn't been balanced properly was was told that while the balance was slightly out, the tyre wasn't round and there was a fault with it.....but nothing dangerous.

When we returned home, hubby went to the garage that supplied them who tested both the tyre and the wheel and agreed that the tyre was faulty. Luckily, he had a Michelin rep coming to see him a few weeks later and requested the car back at that time to retest and show the rep the problem....who agreed that the tyre was faulty.

The garage replaced our tyre and made a claim from Michelin for the cost - whether they have settled with him, we have no idea, but if our tyre was faulty, then it could be a bad batch maybe.

Given we are in Guernsey where the speed limit is at most 35, we didn't have any opportunity to notice the wheel wobble (which came in around 70mph) before we went away.

We have Michelin Pilot Sports on our car.
