Using credit card abroad

Hi

I have a PO Credit card which I only use when overseas as they don't charge a transaction fee. In the past I've called them to tell them I'm going away but I can't find anything on their website about this. Do I still need to do this?

I've just spent 15 minutes doing the same for my debit card and discovered my bank no longer wants/needs to be told.

Thanks

I don't bother with any of my cards these days. In fact I've rarely done it ever.

Take a backup card, especially with having PO card - you don't want to have to call their awful BoI customer services to sort out any problems. Starling Bank, Monzo, Loot.io are ideal and cost free.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • I had the same problem looking on their website ...no mention anywhere!
Downloaded their app and there is a button to let them know.
I am away for 31 days but appt only allows up to 30 days . Its say call!
    So I did .
Eventually spoke to two different people who could not help ,then during yet another on hold menu choice it said there is no need to let them know if travelling abroad.
I am taking a back up card too !
POST OFFICE ....PLEASE CLARIFY ON YOUR WEBSITE AND APP !!

That may be their official position, but I don't think I've ever had any issues using their cards abroad and I've never told them.

Note that it is ESSENTIAL to tell the Cumberland.

I arrived at the airport, went straight to the ATM and found that my card did not work. When I contacted them they 'allowed' me to withdraw my own money, but only for a week. After that I had to contact them again, and after a telephone conversation they agreed to give me a whole month!

I don't believe this is true now-it seems to have changed in the last couple of weeks.

At the beginning of the month I notified NW (online using their section and dropdown menu) that I was likely to use my debit and credit card abroad. Two different countries and dates.

After a couple of days plans changed so I wasn't going to the second country but stayed longer in the first.

I spent ages at the airport trying to find the dropdown menu site but couldn't so sent a message explaining my new itinerary.

When I got home I read the reply message saying that it's no longer necessary to inform NW of travel abroad as they're confident they're sufficiently aware of usual spending to be able to spot discrepancies.

    I'm not so sure.

However, an innovation seems to be notification, and breakdown of, spending and percentages in the last month. It made worrying reading for me but will be a good MSE tool.
