Good thinking - actually, "double-duty", I've used old credit cards for applying sealant around the bath! Gave a nice even finish!...
  • Hi I am trying to clean the outside of my kettle as it has got very water-marked and had lime-scale deposits on it.I live in a very hard water area.I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of the marks but they still re-appear.
Any ideas anyone .It is a shiny(well was once) Russell hobbs ondinary electric kettle
  • Not a clue about limescale - our water is lovely and soft. Am sure you will get loads of tips on that from others more clued up. Not gloating, honestly, as know that I will have same problems when we move.
However, when you get rid of the limescale, little baby oil or olive oil on a cloth or bit of kitchen roll, wipe over any stainless steel kitchen items - brings them up as good as new.

Try a little vinegar mixed with warm water.

If I've been squeezing lemons or limes I split the leftover "halves" and use these to remove limescale from the outside of appliances. Rub the surface well with the inside of the fruit skin, leave for a bit, (pithy bits and all) then wipe with damp kitchen paper and buff with a microfibre cloth. If the deposits are heavy it might take a couple of goes.

I've not tried this with very shiny stuff but I imagine the limescale may have done some damage anyway. Try it on the base or somewhere like that first?

    Hiya :)

We have an older thread on cleaning kettle that should give you more ideas if you need them and so I'll merge the two together for you.

Since posts are listed in date order you'll need to read from the beginning to catch up :)

  • Hope you have some success with all the suggestions. Have you tried filling with lemon juice & soaking overnight to clear the build up of lime-scale? It works for me every time!

As for cleaning the outside, my kettle has a robust black plastic handle & black knob on the "whistle". Do think it would be okay to put the complete kettle in the dishwasher to brighten up the now dreary looking stainless steel mirror finish?
