Oldstyle cleaning of mirrored stainless steel kettle?

I've had a look through the zillions thread, and even have a book on cleaning without chemicals, but I am having no joy with my kettle. It's a stove top stainless steel one, but not one I can scour, as you can some pans, as it's mirrored, and I feel it's vulnerable to scratching. It's not chrome - it really is "mirrored stainless steel" (on the box!)

I did cover it with bicarb cream once, and that brought up the shine in places, and certainly got rid of the grease. But there are areas where it looks slightly tarnished, and areas where something appears to have splashed and burnt onto it firmly - black.

Does anyone have any experience with similar? It's such a shame, it was a present from my boyfriend after I admired it so much in the shop, and now I feel really guilty that I wish I had a brushed steel one instead!

I think you are supposed to use baby oil to bring up the shine on stainless steel.

Otherwise, have you tried vinegar and newspaper as you would with a mirror? Have a look in the cleaning index for directions on how to do that.

As it's a stove top one you could try filling it with clean water (so it sinks) and then place it overnight in a washing bowl with water and a good dose of bio washing powder in it. If that doesn't get everything try a repeat the next night but use a vinegar solution. Not too strong or you'll stink the house out :)

This is a great help, thank you. I'm going to start with the bio powder (funny, I never thought to try that, even though it's good on other things), then the newspaper and vinegar (as I have that already), and then lemon juice or vinegar soak if it needs it...I'll keep you posted!

The list of uses for Avon SSS suggests a small spray onto stainless steel.

This gives the stainless steel a bit of a coat which means things shouldn't stick to it. I use a quick spray of window cleaner or as Galtizz suggests baby oil, any of them will give a thin coating.

I have a stove top stainless steel kettle. Once about every 3 months it gets a run through the dishwasher, followed by a dousing in oven cleaner, followed if needs be by another run in the dishwasher. I think you needn't worry about the 'mirrored' term it just means extra shiny innit?

i remember there was one episode of Wife Swap, one wife would spend 5 hours a day to clean her whole house and she used baby oil on her stainless steel stove.

    Hi Loadsabob
My last kettle was a mirrored stainless steel one, & it too sat near the cooker & got splattered with grease marks. The only thing that really worked was a solution of soda crystals to get the grease off, then wipe down with soapy water & dry really well with a soft cloth or tea towel. Apart from the grease, it is the marks from evaporating water that really makes it look scruffy.

You are all stars - I am going to have a go at it tonight, as I didn't get around to the bio treatment last night. Chipps, I have soda crystals in, haven't used them yet, so will start with those! Sounds hopeful! And I will report back, of course!
