Just roll up at a suitable post office with a photo and your DL. It's literally just your photo stuck in a pre-printed card with your details hand written, can't see why in the world it would take 3-4 weeks!!!

Exactly what i read olnine and thought, but visited our local 'main' post office today and was met with 2 blank expressions and a 'computer says no' attitude  apparenlty if its a franchise they dont do it, or if its not a crown post office??

I have driven a million plus kilometers in Thailand over a forty eight year period and never been asked for an international driving licence by police or car rental firms.

I had one last year and got stopped at a roadside check, purely out to catch us wealthy tourists and he looked a bit miffed that I had one, so i will be needing one.

Granted it was in Pattaya and not rural Isaan

They won't ask for one but probably best to have one just in case.

Takes 5 minutes at the post office as others have said.

Ignore those who cast doubt on hiring in Thailand. It's cheaper than a car and driver and the roads are good. It helps if you're an aggressive driver and can "go local" when you get behind the wheel. Don't even contemplate hiring a motorbike or scooter unless you're very very very experienced though. Their shockingly high road death statistics are almost ALL two wheel based. You will see why.

Ive ridden mopeds in thailand for 12 years with no issues, other than last year needing an IDP/IDL.

Sadly, the post office were less than helpful when i popped in today and was told 'never heard of it, we dont do it and you need to go to London to get one'

Post Office website suggests it is only available from selected branches
    https://www.postoffice.co.uk/international-driving-permit?awc=6402_1539871195_d911e2fa7ecab0b56a5dae3ce867741a

Go to the Branch finder (link on that page) and click on "Refine Branch Services" to only search for branches that do "International Driving Permits"

I am slap bang in the centre of Sheffield and the nearest five branches it brings up for me are 1 in Sheffield, 1 in Stockport, 1 in Halifax, 1 in Leeds and 1 in Nottingham  so not many branches do it.
  • There is a red link on the PO page that I linked that shows which PO's offer the service.

    Beaten to it...

I am surprised that he let you off, rather than asking for some kind of non-existent document. Last time I was stopped by a hungry policeman, he informed me that I was going the wrong way along a one-way street. This was a road that I used every week and so knew that he was talking nonsense, but he still stuck to his story for a few minutes...

You appear to have ignored post #2 - why?

Well it was dangerous last year as I was driving in Thailand for two weeks.

    :rotfl:

My tip stands. Riding a moped there is probably going to give you the highest chance of coming home in a box. The statistics show that and I suspect the main issue is when you start to feel confident about it.
