Think its irrelevant if people think its a hobby and how the guy and/or family wants to live their lives, he may have a degree, teach or be doing session work but its none of your business and I don't think you'll be thanked for commenting on any of that. Further, over hearing one argument doesn't mean their relationships are breaking down, families often argue. The reasonable thing to do is to keep trying to negotiate the time he plays. It would make sense for him to get sound proofing but that is going to cost £1000s. Incidentally does anybody hear think about the effect on the neighbours with all the extensions being built? We have had 2 years of circular saws and drills from our neighbours on both sides. Electronic drums are not a real subsititute for a serious drummer, silencer pads are no good for feel but silencers and practice pads could probably be incorporated into a a routine that lasts that long throughout the day.  I suggest having a conversation but unless you want to have a serious falling out I would avoid commenting on a persons way of life because that's none of your business. All those that see it as a hobby I hope you aren't music fans as there are many professional musicians who fail to profit from their music and have to hold day jobs.

  • I commented because it is a common complaint, it doesn't really matter if this one particular episode has since been resolved. If people didn't want to read it anymore then why would the thread remain on the site. I think people just don't like to hear another point of view.

Posts are left on the site so that people searching for similar things can see what was said in the past, but adding a new comment to an old thread is generally not done because people see the bumped thread and read the whole thing thinking they can help somebody with a current issue, only to realise that the original poster has long since solved the issue when somebody points out how old the thread is.  If you want to discuss the issue, you'd be much better starting a new thread (referring back to this one if you wish).  At least then people would know it's nothing anybody needs help with now and not waste their time.

One of my interests / hobbies is old jet engines - but if I buy a turbofan and install it in my garage, should my neighbours have to listen to that all day because it's my 'way of life'?

No, because it's not neighbourly... just like smashing out Eye Of the Tiger for 5 hours a day on drums isn't either.

That's probably quieter than the pulse jet I'm currently building in my shed :)

Someone earlier mentioned using a rehearsal studio.   £10 an hour is about the going rate.
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!
