Hi, bought an ipad from eglobalcentral a few days ago, and paid checked out via Paypal.

A few minutes later I had a text sent from Paypal "62226" asking me to authorise a transaction. it did mention the retailer and accurately mentioned the amount, and asked to hit 1 to authorise or 2 if not. I replied "1". I then had the same text again, so, assuming the it was just a Paypal glitch, replied again with "1". I then received a text saying the payment had been authorised.

Imagine my surprise when I found out a few days later that I had been charged 30p for the two texts.

I know, I know, its 30p on a £260 iPad, but it's the PRINCIPLE lol. I've raised a complaint with them but am receiving (as to be expected) obtuse replies. I seem to remember having similar texts from my bank in the dim past but have never been charged.

I've never had these messages before, just wondering whether it's a new revenue stream that they've found...

Anyway, beware!

  • It’ll be in the T’s and C’s that text messages to that number are charged at the standard rate etc etc as with any other company that uses a similar service.

texts to 62226 are charged outside your allowance. others have reported they ignored the texts and the transaction still went through.

Whether it's in a long list of T&C's or not, I would expect, that the text should also include words along the lines of, replying to this text will be charged at, then the amount.

I know it's only 30p and I know I'd probably would just leave it myself. But if it's not included, it might be worth flagging up to the regulator, as that info should definitely be included in the text.

Unfortunately it is a short-code and are never free of charge, unless the carrier has an agreement with the source, which is normally reserved for government or not-for-profit organisations.

PayPal are not liable for mobile operator charges and when linking a mobile number to an account, there is a line on-screen which states that exchanges with them over SMS are charged at the standard rate, in addition to their policies. It is the carrier who charges for the text, not them. If PayPal were to charge, it would be a Premium SMS which is billed directly to your subscriber account as a third-party service fee.

If disputing it, contact your mobile operator. I cannot see them refunding it, in which case a complaint would be required, although is it worth the battle for 30 pence? You do not need to respond to the text in future; call their customer service for free and one of the team will manually authorize it for you.
