Since when did Like New mean New?

Private sellers definition of "New" on ebay is atrocious. If i want a used item, i will select "Used". Having used something once or "only a couple of times" means it is not new.0

It's as bad on facebook and Shpock as well. On another group I sometimes read they used to have a collection of these for sale posts which were hilarious - some of them were things like' brand new hardly used iphone, RRP £699 I only want £599 ONO -screen is cracked and home button doesn't work but this is otherwise like new'.
or
'as new top of the range fish tank, only selling as I'm moving, cost over £1000 less than a year ago, looking for offer sin region of £700 for a quick sale - will need to replace one glass panel as it cracked when I moved it.'
The best bit is where someone has replied on the for sale post to tell them that they must be joking, and the seller gets all indignant and insists it is new- just used a bit and damaged.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I disagree, an item by its very definition that has been used cannot be termed new.
This is exactly my feeling. If the item has been removed from the box, powered on, then put back in the box, then in my opinion it's not used, because the device essentially hasn't been operated beyond verifying that it works. As soon as you put your SIM in, or use it for a day or two, then it is used..... because it HAS BEEN USED.
These devices haven't been used for 2 days either. They've probably had a years use, then are being listed as New in eBay? They're not new. They're Like New, which means Used. I really think eBay should start clamping down tbh.0 -

Brand New
Lets be honest, the amount of people that think it's 'Bran' new would render it useless :rotfl:0 -
The funniest mis-description I ever saw on ebay was a used car being sold, he explained he had bought it from his friend, then stated
"the guy my mate got it from had it from new, so its a one owner"...0 -
Since when has New meant Used?
A few months ago I was looking for a portable FLAC music player (FLAC is a lossless format that is an alternative to lossy mp3 etc)
The model I wanted is about £90 new and usually sells for about £40 used on eBay.
I saw one listed as 'New' but reading between the lines of the description it had clearly been used.
I decided to bid as if it were used. I put in a maximum bid of £40 but won it for £19 (plus about £3.90 p&p).
When it arrived it looked new with no signs of wear or usage but there were a few music files stored on it so it had been used. I suppose the seller could have argued that he only put them there for testing.
As I was more than happy with it, and had anticipated it being used, I accepted it.
I thought long and hard about feedback. Should I leave neutral or negative and warn others of this seller's creative description? In the end I left positive feedback.
Perhaps that was wrong but I just couldn't bring myself to mark down a bargain purchase that I was very satisfied with.0 -
That reminds me of a DVD boxed set I won recently. Described as brand new never played it arrived with writing on each disc and on the fold out bit that holds the individual CDs, 2 CDs in the set had minor scratches but tested and played alright.
Decided to leave no feedback at all purely because I'd won it at 99p plus I paid £3.50 postage and it turned up as a signed for parcel - so they must have made a loss on it -and it still played OK.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I’ve had bad luck with this issue a couple of times this year with motorcycle jackets.
First one listed as ‘new without tags’ - listing said ‘worn once’ so I bought it. It smelt very musty and had spots of mould on the arms. When I challenged the seller, he said he did just wear it once, on a tour of Europe. It smelt musty because it had been in the wardrobe for the last 5 years. It went back.
Second one, ‘New with tags’ - again smelt musty and the tags had been tied back on. When I challenged the Seller they said they had ‘only worn it to pass their CBT’ and it had been in their parents loft for the last year. It went also went back!0 -
I sometimes use "New Other" for clothes which are unworn but a few years old and could do with a wash just to freshen them up before wear, which I explain in the listing. Freshening leather is obviously a bit trickier. I looked at a listing for a laptop listed as "New Other" and the description said it was an ex-demonstration model, which had been so heavily tried out that they mentioned the battery would no longer hold a charge for long!0
