Since when did Like New mean New?

I am trying to find my mum a new phone and naturally went to eBay. I've lost count the amount of phones that are listed as 'New other (see details)' then the listing it says "Like New".

If it's second hand and has been opened and operated for any period of time, then it's Used. The only exception for me, would be unboxed, powered on, and then replaced in the box. If it's been used..... then it's Used, not new. Like New = Used. The meaning is in the word..... has it been used? Yes it's been used..... then it's used.

Honestly, I don't get it at all. It's nothing more than lying really.

I do agree with your post in the main.

I don't agree about "naturally went to eBay", it would be the last place I would want to buy a new phone from.

Yup, I'd go so far as to say it would be the last place I would buy anything from. (Yes I do buy from ebay when there are no better options).

I've always assumed "Like New" means "Used but with no visible wear and tear or damage" e.g. an item of clothing that has been worn and washed a few times but then forgotten/outgrown/become unfashionable. Although, from reading some people's experiences there's a lot of interpretation of how far away from Brand New/Never Used that can be...

It's still Used though, and you wouldn't list a garment as New when it's been washed?

I disagree, an item by its very definition that has been used cannot be termed new.

  • I think a simple solution would be the addition of one word to the options when selling something.

Hence the addition of the word "Like" ;) It's an alternative to "Lightly Used" - but as I said, that's open to a lot of variation...

It depends on the item. Sometimes it makes a difference to buyers whether it is New and Sealed (BNIB - BNWT) or New, Opened but never Used. A book can be read once carefully and still look exactly like a new one on the shelves at Waterstones - or it can be read once and look a complete wreck. Both are Used but one is Like New.
I need to think of something new here...

On Amazon "Like new" is generally classed as something that has been in the box but the box may have cosmetic damage.
For clothing I'd class it as something that had possibly been tried on once but not worn. Nothing "worn a few times and washed" could ever be classed as "Like new", the clue there is in the word "worn"!
