Record and catch-up TV

For more years than I can remember we had sky for sports etc. My husband passed away a few months ago, and I have now cancelled the Sky contract as I only really watch terrestrial stations. Is there a way I can pause and record or watch catch-up TV without paying a monthly fee? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Buy a Youview or Freeview Play box. These will record terrestrial TV and will have catch up apps such as iPlayer. They will need to be connected to a TV aerial.

Or of course if they have a Sky HD setup they can get a Freesat recordable box and just swap the boxes over.

Which is a much cheaper option if there is not already an aerial installed.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

An Amazon Fire stick enables catchup with stop, fast forwards and backwards, but no record.

However, there is so much catchup now that you can watch most tv via that.

There is also an app to catch up un channels other than the main ones, but that may because I took out a Prime subscription.
