I'm just glad I don't work in a bank any more and so won't have to field the millions of people with lots of mattress-dwelling £50 notes who want them changed into new ones.

Ah yes, the joys of mouldy/mildewey money. Only slightly more pleasant than being asked to handle sweaty money in the summer. "Madam, your outfit has no pockets, and I didn't see you queueing with the money in your hand, do I want to know where you've just pulled this from?"

This is what I posted, please re-read:
" I do keep a little change for parking and the very few shops that still use cash, and the local markets."

-Talking specifically about my situation in my hometown. Not generally, about everywhere else. Blimey, the way you can attract misdirected comments here!:(

    Blimey back!
    And 'misdirected comment' back too!
Did you read what I wrote?
I was, simply, querying your statement about 'the very few shops that still take cash' which seemed odd, as very few shops (none?), in my experience, don't take cash.
(It may even be illegal not to - though I recall a couple of headline making pubs that have gone down this route. But they're so unusual they make, er, headlines).
If that's not the case where you live then that's fine, but I'd be surprised.
Perhaps you meant the 'very few shops that still only take cash'?

They are stuck now with retaining notes because they have become billboards for proclaiming inclusivity and recognition of minorities, women's rights, etc.

£50 notes were just about to be abolished, but suddenly were engulfed in debates about which historical black woman scientist should be honoured on the picture. Now it's impossible to end them.

I've always loved the old traditional £50 notes. They are works of art, in a lovely orangey-red. When I tried to get some at Christmas once as special presents for the children I was told they had sold out - there was always a run at Christmas for that reason.

    Oh for goodness sake.

Since we started putting historical figures on BoE notes there have been three women depicted. There have been 15 men. The next note - the new £20 in 2020 - will have a man on the back. All have been white.

Would you care to give a single example of proclaiming inclusivity, recognition of minorities, women's rights on BoE notes?

    It's PC gone mad!
