To a certain extent I think most of us collude in the "rip off" process because in many cases we pay the asking price. If all the consumers of this country participated in a total consumer strike, buying ONLY the specific items which were required to keep body and soul together in terms of food, maybe some of the prices for other consumer items would collapse. Do we really need new mobile phones, DVDs, new cars, perfumes, toiletries, etc? Of course we don't. Most people could manage perfectly well with what they've got, and if we were in another wartime rationing situation, life would still carry out without them. Many people still can't differentiate between "Need" and "Want". When these priorities get sorted out in their minds, maybe consumer spending would reduce and some of the manufacters' high profit margins would be reduced. And I was going to add, "this would probably result in some redundancies too, in manufacturing industries" but then I realised the UK hardly has a manufacturing industry any more. Everything nowadays seems to be made in China, so probably the effects might be felt more there than here.

People, the original post in this thread was about the fact that it is expensive in Britain.
What does it have to do with you all critisizing consumer society? It is completely different topic.
The joke: every country has their characteristics. France is elegant and tasty, Russia is rude and drunk, Finland is blond and calm, Britain is expensive and poorer quality.:D
P.S. Disclaimer : I'm not British, I don buy eeee xboxes
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.
