I am a complete idiot when it comes to anything technical so would really appreciate it if somebody could please help me in basic terms.
On start up I keep getting the following message
F-Secure Anti-Virus Internet Shield Daemon has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Error signature
szAppName: fsdfwd.exe szAppVer: 5.90.400.0 sz.ModName: msvcrt.dll
Info

I don't even use F-Secure. I used to have TalkTalk Internet Security - Premium Edition (which I think has something to do with F-Secure). I have uninstalled everything F-Secure related but TalkTalk for some reason doesnt uninstall and still appears on my hardware list.
I don't think this is causing any problems as such but it is getting very irritating having to delete these messages everytime I switch on.
Please help, it's driving me mad!!!

Can anybody please help me?
Even the toaster thread got a reply, I'm feeling very neglected here!0 -
Start - Run - type msconfig - OK. On the Startup tab, look for and disable (untick) anything which looks like F-Secure or TalkTalk. OK out and restart computer. When restarted, tick the System Config warning and click OK.
If the error still appears, download HijackThis Installer, install it, run a system scan and post the log file here.0 -

Try something like this:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
to remove any entries for the F-Secure software. You can probably do the same through Hijackthis though.
C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security is the directory it's installed in.
Also can you not download the software again from Talk Talk? As sometimes re-installing it will either sort it out or allow you to remove it properly.0 -
I have tried removing it through the add or remove programs in the control panel but when I click on TalkTalk Online Security and select remove I just get the egg timer come up for a couple of seconds and then it seems to just stop and it hasn't removed it.0
-
You edited as I posted so it looks like I completely missed you point!
I don't have the CD so no way I can reinstall it!0 -
TalkTalk Internet Security appears to be a 'badged' version of F-Secure, so they are one and the same thing.
You say you removed it, however as you can see a number of TalkTalk processes are still running and are at least providing you with anti-virus and anti-spyware software. If you uninstall it or 'fix' it using HijackThis, what will you use for your internet security?
The only thing which isn't working is F-Secure Anti-Virus Internet Shield Daemon (fsdfwd.exe), as indicated by the startup error, so if you want to keep TalkTalk/F-Secure I would investigate this error. Maybe you can download a free trial and reinstall it and use your existing licence with it.0 -
I don't want to use the TalkTalk security at all. I want it completely rid of then I was going to use the free AVG .
Any chance of you telling me how I can uninstall or fix?! As I said before I have tried the add or remove in control panel but nothing happens.0 -
Okay that's clearer. Download AVG first and a free firewall, e.g. Comodo, while you still have an anti-virus running. Do you still use TalkTalk as your internet provider?
Then boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 key on startup and choose Safe Mode from the menu) and try removing TalkTalk/F-Secure via Add or Remove Programs.
If that doesn't work, still in Safe Mode, run a HijackThis scan and tick the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [News Service] "C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\FSGUI\ispnews.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: TalkTalk Online Security.lnk = C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\backweb\81720\Program\fspex.exe

O23 - Service: F-Secure Management Agent (FSMA) - F-Secure Corporation - C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\Common\FSMA32.EXE
and click Fix.
Next, using Windows Explorer, delete the C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\ folder.
Reboot as normal, watching for any odd startup messages/errors, and then install AVG and a firewall.0 -
Right, I followed your instructions to the letter. Have AVG and Comodo downloaded. BTW I still use TalkTalk as my internet provider but also T-Com in Germany.
Trying to remove in safe mode didnt work so I ran a HijackThis scan and managed to tick and fix everything you said except for
O4 - Global Startup: TalkTalk Online Security.lnk = C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security\backweb\81720\Program\fspex.exe
as this didn't show up this time on the scan.
I also tried to delete the C:\Program Files\TalkTalk Online Security folder but got the following error message
Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete fpshx.dll: Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
And to top it all off on start up I stll got the Internet Shield daemon message.
Any other suggestions greatfully received.0
