CAR V I N Number

I am in the process of selling my old car on e-bay.
I recieved a e-mail requesting for the vin number so that the person could do a H P I Check on thc car, which i gladly gave!.
Some days later i started to think about this. why would someone need this number to do a hpi check!, surely the make and model number would have been sufficent to complete this task.
I was recieving a lot of emails from the adverts & just got caught up in the moment,
Have i shot myself in the foot ?, or are my concerns unwarranted?.
They say theres nothing worse than a old fool!!!!.

thankyou,:)

Struggling to think of a criminal reason to want your VIN although others with more knowledge may know of a use for it. Can't see anyone going to the trouble of putting false VINs in the various locations around the car it will be needed.

Seems more likely to me it was just a confusion of terminology. Did they really mean VRN (vehicle registration number) and simply mixed up their terms?

When you park the car, do you stick a bit of paper inside the corner of the windscreen...?

They wanted the VIN because to get full protection from HPI then they require the VIN.

Every car vehicle has a number number to identify it.

Yes I do. And I remove the number plates just in case, its common sense.

That's confusing - you wouldn't share your PIN. So are you saying the OP shouldn't have shared their VIN?

Not confusing at all ... the post was commenting on the redundant "number" reference, not regarding whether to share a PIN/VIN.

(People will say VIN number / PIN number ... the N represents "number" so the 2nd word is redundant).

I agree, its like people who say Tannoy when they mean "public address system". Tannoy is a brand name.
