instead of a space saver or steel wheel sound like he may have bought an alloy one.
He has no rights to a refund, if his new car was from the same dealer that was the time to negotiate as a matter of goodwill only. He can always ask the dealer though but be prepared and gracious if no is their answer.
Best bet to sell it on Ebay and cut your losses.0 -
Does he need a normal spare for, and will it fit the new hyundai - could he keep it?
Obvious thing but where did he buy it from - ask them if they'll take it back and refund? If he's buying all this from one Hyundai dealer I'd play on the goodwill.
And if he's looking for a full size/speed spare for the new Hyundai, give him a hand and look on Ebay for a used wheel rim or buy a new, steel wheel, from an online type shop - you should be able to get one for £40 - £100.
£700 for a wheel is super expensive.0 -
all bought from the same dealer ... according to my father , when they did the part exchange the dealer didn't seem interested in taking the wheel,0

I wish I'd known what he was doing before, rather than after the fact ..
Can you get the receipts and see how much they spent on these cars - you could pay the dealership a visit on a busy Saturday afternoon and kick-up a stink...... "My father has bought two cars from you, he's spent over XXX, he's a frail 80+ year old and you charged him over £700 (??) for a wheel that he can't use...."0 -

New: 50 for a wheel another £110 or so for a decent tyre0 -
Except that's simply not true. Can you get the receipts and see how much they spent on these cars - you could pay the dealership a visit on a busy Saturday afternoon and kick-up a stink...... He bought a car, and bought a spare wheel that fitted it.
Months later, he changed the car... but kept that spare wheel, even though it was no longer any use to him.
That's hardly the dealer's fault, is it?
He had the peace-of-mind of having a spare available while he was driving that first car. The spare did the job it was bought for.
Quite why he bought a £700 alloy is another question.

It's not the dealer's fault he can't use it. He sold the car for which it was intended.
The dealer have no obligation to refund for a part that was sold over 9 months ago and is no longer wanted by the buyer.0 -

dealer probably sold doddery old guy nice shine alloy as a spare to match alloys already on car, but surely not........0 -
If doddery old guy doesn't have the mental capacity to hold his own in a normal consumer transaction, surely he shouldn't be on the road and be a mortal risk to other road users??!!0

I would be inclined to check on the correct price of the wheel/tyre that he bought. Did he get his leg lifted at the time of the original purchase?
If so, you have a cause to go back to the dealer. If not ebay is the answer but expect a big loss0
