Dodgy iPhone Plug

We recently bought our daughter an iPhone from CEX.
Two days after purchase the phone was charging, it had been for less than an hour and the plug exploded.
It tripped the switch for all downstairs sockets, there was no other damage other than easily wiped off burn marks and our beating hearts.
We had a friend check the socket was safe to use.
Should we ask for any sort of compensation or just a new plug?

This may not be as straightforward as you appear to think.

What losses have you incurred? Why would you be entitled to "compensation"?

Can you show that it was the plug itself at fault here or could it have been a problem with your own wiring? Is your "friend" a qualified electrician?

Plugs don't usually randomly "explode"..

Was the charger and lead supplied by CEX and are they genuine Apple ones or a generic items?

Not a qualified electrician, he's a handy man and neighbour so was close enough to get him to check the socket for our own safety, weren't thinking of compensation 😏
And the plug was supplied by CEX, it's an official iPhone plug.

So why are you thinking of that now?

You have no injury and have incurred no losses.

If you did push for compensation, you'd first need to show that the plug itself was at fault and that CEX are liable because they failed to check the condition of the plug prior to selling it to you. You'd then have to itemise your losses.

"official i phone plug"......doesn't necessarily mean genuine if you google/ebay official i phone plug it brings up some very cheap items

I import bits and pieces from China, and the amount of emails and offers I get for 'Genuine' iPhone plugs at around 30p is insane.

It won't be genuine, it'll have been a near-perfect copy.
In this instance, I reckon if you go in via social media with some pictures of the damage (hope you took some!) you'll get a voucher.

I'm not thinking masses of compo here, we incurred no losses, no damage and, more importantly, no one was harmed. And no, not faulty wiring as our landlord sent a qualified electrician to check the socket.
We were just thinking along the lines of inconvenience.
We're going through tomorrow...

This is a tough board
But in your op you do mention compensation .
I would strongly question what an official iPhone plug is.

OP look closely at the iPhone plug and you'll probably find its a cheapo Chinese job
