Smart TV set up - payment card essential?

Hi, can anyone tell me if I have to add a payment card to a smart tv, or can we watch it without?

We’d considered a Roku, but apparently that needs a debit card else you can’t complete set up.

We’re a small group of carers, clubbing together to buy a smart tv for elderly lady,we’ve been using our Ipads to play things on YouTube and iplayer etc, with much pleasure.
But none of us want to attach our own bank cards to the system, she has her own unlimited WiFi, set up in one of the carers names, but that’s as far as we want to go. We won’t be buying any films etc, and certainly don’t want that to happen by accident.

  • You can use it without. I've never set up a payment card.
  • Never needed a card when I set up my Roku
  • We have a Hisense smart TV and have never even considered registering a card on it, didn't even see a request when we set it up. But that is a full TV, not just an attachment, but it has the same capability.

Cannot think of any reason why an attachment that is capable of streaming free tv would require a card to be registered.

I have no idea where you intend to get it, but can I make a suggestion. Either ask in the shop or email the company before you buy it and ask specifically if a card has to be registered on the unit. If in the shop get the comment in writing, if online you have the email. That way it becomes part of the purchase contract and should make it easy to return if it turns out otherwise..
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

According to the link below (with instructions) you can set up a Roku without creating an account and entering debit/credit card details if you do the set up via the Roku website rather than on the device itself:
