Smoke alarms expire 10 years after manufacture, whether used or not. This is because the radioactive material inside degrades over time and renders the smoke alarm ineffective.

Whilst ionisation detectors have radioactive material within them, optical (photoelectric) detectors and heat detectors do not. However these all have a defined lifespan. Ionisation detectors are not appropriate in most cases. These installations should be compliant with BS5839-6.0 -
Where you open them, they have a sticker. Mines says "replace unit by sept 2015
Wow what an attitude you have, most smoke alarms have a 10 year life span so if they say replace by Sept 2015 then you need to replace them by Sept 2015 which in case you aren't sure was 3 years ago :TI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
