Decent Quality Smoke Alarm

One of my smoke alarms seems faulty, even with a new battery, the low battery bleep keeps going off.

I've had the alarm for a good number of years, so I may as well get a couple of new ones.

I see Aldi have a set on offer next week

I am wondering whether these are any good

Also, at Wilko is this double pack

Are your current detectors mains powered with battery back-up?

I used to get ones with replaceable batteries but a while back I switched to the version that have 10yr batteries built in

I use Aico detectors. I would not be comfortable opting for the very cheap offerings available.

Out of those options I would definitely go for the Wilkon ones. I've never had a problem with my Ei smoke/co alarms. They are a UK company, so should be compliant.

A lithium battery is always a good option if testing your alarms is difficult. I'm wondering if the low battery alarm still works the same if you use a lithium cell?

Hi. They all have to meet a minimum standard so think they will be fine. I have 2 in my property. They were bought from Woolworths (Big W) so that is your starter for ten as to how old they are. Where you open them, they have a sticker. Mines says "replace unit by sept 2015"

So I think they may only have a limited life. I have just gone and opened it up and it says for repair or disposal return to E I Co Ltd, Shannon, Ireland. I will go and google this and ask them if I should replace them.

    Will report back here soon.

Check with your local fire brigade. They will offer a free fire safety visit and tell you where the best place to site detectors and will supply and fit them for you too. After all it is no good buying the best and most expensive detector if you locate it in a subobtimal position or need more than you think to cover your home properly.

You only tend to get one chance to get this right and they happily offer this free service, so why not use it?

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Actually, Ei Electronics is an Irish company. They are based in Shannon in County Clare.

Why waste your time, they expired in 2015 so what do you expect their answer to be?

I have a box with 6 smoke detectors in them. I bought them from the variety store I mentioned as they were 10p.

So if they are in a box and not used I want to know about the date stamp.

I am not sure what the answer will be. But I will report it back here.

OP here ... thanks for all the answers.

I bought the Wilko ones and all OK.

One on upstairs landing ceiling, the other in hallway.

Old ones were actually installed by fire brigade many years ago. I put the new ones in the same spot as they were.
