Cat Repellent

Options
As readers of my previous thread will know, I've just had a gravel driveway installed.......

.......which is apparently the new neighbourhood litter tray.

I've heart so many conflciting reviews about how to keep them away. Lion poo. Ultrasonic scarers. Pepper etc.

Does anybody have any recommendations? I don't want to throw much money at the problem nor do I want to be picking up cat poo every day, for cats which aren't even mine. It's just gross. Getting a cat myself isn't an option despite that probably being the best deterrent!

  • I recommend the Ultrasonic scarers,

We had a really bad problem with our neighbors' cat, when we first moved in our front garden was absolutely covered in it. It stunk when you walked to the front door and mowing the lawn was horrible.

As soon as I put them in it stopped instantly. The ones I have are PestBye,

You can get a pack off 2 from Amazon for £25,

Only annoying thing is having to replace the batteries as when they do run out the cats immediately return.

Don't bother with a solar powered one, I tried one and it was useless,

The sonic scarers seem to work for the neighbours. Doesn't work on the fox though :)

  • I've had a large family of hedgehogs visiting my garden for the past few months and following advice, I am feeding them tinned cat food (chicken flavour).
Unfortunately, a couple of the local cats found this are were getting stuck in before the hogs had a chance so I tried one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Medipaq-Garden-Scare-Reflective-Marble/dp/B007ZCV5IM
Initially I was a bit skeptical but it's done the job and the unwelcome cats won't go anywhere near it.

My mum used a combo of Jeyes disinfectant and curry / chilli powder to try and keep cats at bay. Effective until it rains heavily.

I do empathise - we have the same issue, although we do also have a cat so I know some of what I pick up is hers...not all though...we don't feed her THAT much

  • Thank you for all of the suggestions!
I've bought the lot; garden scare, ultrasonic scarers, gel.
It's revolting, I don't want to get home and smell the stench of cat poo, not spend ages picking it all up.
    I'm sincerely hoping something works.

That is poisonous to cats
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

I had a similar problem ages ago and the cat repellent from Wilko worked a treat.

It smelt of Garlic which was quite noticable the first couple of applications (I had a stash of petrol station gloves in the shed to make sure I didnt get any of it on my hands) and after a short amount of time it worked. As its outside the smell subsided very quickly to my nose but I assume its still very noticeable to cats. Quick spray every few weeks saw them elsewhere - not been back.

Now the kicker - I dont think the stuff Wilko sell at the moment is the same! However if you can find anything online that is reviewed as smelling garlick-y then I would definitely give that a whirl.

    hope this helps
  • I've found the ultra sonic things work on some cats but not all. But even a reduction in the 6 poos a day was a bonus for me! My issue was more in the flower beds and making sure there as no bare soil worked for a while.....the they decided the ornamental grasses tickled their bottoms nicely and started to off load right on them >:-( So angry my plants get killed by other peoples animals. I put sticks poking up in them to try and stop it with limited effect. Needless to say the neighbourhood cats give me a wide berth if they see me coming as they know a bucket of water isn't far behind me!!
