I've bought a couple of Office keys from eBay recently for friend's PC's

Both worked fine, and still do, but one of those 'disappeared' from ebay before I had time to do 'feedback'!

    :o

I paid £1.87 on eBay for an Office 365 subscription for 5 PCs which Microsoft has so far accepted as genuine. Licence key arrived within a minute.
  • No it doesn't allow multiple downloads. It's strictly one copy per employee.
You can get two licences, one for PC's and one for a Mac.

Given this was so urgent 10 days ago, has the OP actually done anything about it? :D

The fact that a key activates doesn't make it legit. Often those keys are from volume-license versions of Office/Windows,

You might be right with this...

...but this is just wrong (in the EU) and still gets falsely repeated by people over and over again.

Did you read the press release referenced by the Wikipedia article you linked to?

Amongst other things, the press release states:
"Where the copyright holder makes available to his customer a copy – tangible or intangible – and at the same time concludes, in return form payment of a fee, a licence agreement granting the customer the right to use that copy for an unlimited period, ..."

    and:
"The Court points out, however, that if the licence acquired by the first acquirer relates to a greater number of users than he needs, that acquirer is not authorised by the effect of the exhaustion of the distribution right to divide the licence and resell only part of it."

So, whilst it seems clear that someone purchasing a full retail copy of Windows has the right to re-sell that copy once the original installation of that copy has been rendered unusable, the above two paragraphs make it clear that the same does not necessarily apply to someone re-selling Windows licence keys when those keys were obtained under a volume licence, particularly when:
    1. The volume licence was sold to the original purchaser on condition that the software be installed on a particular vendor's hardware or on hardware installed within a particular organisation.
    2. The licence keys were either sold or distributed without the permission of the original acquirer (for example, by a member of a organisation's IT department acting without being authorised by the organisation to re-sell a volume licence).
    3. Some licence keys are still being used by the original purchaser.

Yes I went with one of the eBay options. Having been unable to establish the relative legitimacy of the available options, I decided to use the simplest criterion of going for the cheapest option.
