Portable carpet shampooer for small flat . Suggestions please

Howdy!
I have been living in my new home for approx 18 months ,and would like to keep my carpet as clean as possible .
I have a dyson for vacuuming . I think it's about time I got the above ,but I don't have much storage space . Being in a small flat , I don't want to spend a fortune ,and don't want something where you have to keep changing the water / cleaning solution every couple of minutes .
The carpet is very good quality, and it would be a shame not to look after it by being lazy .

Please advise

Thanks :)

I would avoid a carpet cleaner and concentrate on keeping shoes off in the house
  • Thanks gardner.
I do that anyway . Where I lived previously ,I got into a rut ( long story) ,and left a good carpet go bad . I did try a vax at the time, but it didn't do much as I was negligent with it for many years .

I could be wrong but i thought once you shampoo/clean a carpet it attracts dirt quicker

    Hire one, surely?

BTW, the instructions never tell you to put in plain water after washing to rinse the carpet. Leaving the soap in is what makes it get dirty quicker.

It does if you leave detergent in the carpet.

I have a Vax carpet cleaner. I use a minimal amount of detergent and do several rinses with water only to ensure that little or no detergent is left in the carpets.
  • So it seems hiring one is the best solution ?
Just wondering, how often is it best to shampoo a carpet ?

The more often the better, I'd have thought. I guess a minimum of every 6 months.

That depends on your lifestyle and how many live in the house.

We are a retired couple. We don't smoke. We don't have pets any more. We have a shoes off policy. We vacuum regularly. We wet clean the carpets every two or three years at most.

If you have children, dogs, cats, wear outdoor shoes indoors etc then you may need a twice yearly clean or more.

The simple answer is whenever they need cleaning.

There is also the possibility of borrowing a vax from family/ friends/ colleagues if you supply the chemicals. Keep an eye on house-sitting opportunities - you may find you're just checking the post but able to borrow their vax?

Also check on ebay for buyer-collect vaxes that work - use, scrub & relist. My Hermes isn't that expensive for shipping.

I live alone . No pets. Shoes off policy . Sounds like I should wait until this time next year .
