Since the OP only wishes to buy in one street one type of house they aren't in a good position anyway. About all they can hope to do is get in first. And it may be if they hit the timing just right and the sellers need to move somewhere specific or have any place in mind they won't be interested in any tricks..
  • I have to admit that, as someone whose house is just about to go on the market, I wish someone would write me a letter.
Selling up and moving to the seasaw. Mortgage-free by 2020 :)

I have finally accepted an offer on my property after it being on the market for 6 months. In those 6 months, two houses on the very small street I would like to move to have come on the market and been snapped up. This is the only street I am interested in, smaller houses are very rare in this area.

I am considering sending letters to the other houses on the street asking if they are considering moving, has anyone had any experience of this?

If that's the only street you're interested in, you'll have no other choice but to make contact with the owners somehow. The chances that another one will pop up within the next couple of weeks being pretty remote I'd have thought.

Have the 2 other houses actually completed yet? If you're not sure, try contacting the agents selling the house and make them aware you are lurking in the wings if the current sale falls through.

Yes, if you’re going to send the letters yourself. Don’t get an estate agent to do it.

We get letters every week (yes, every week) from EAs saying they have people wanting to buy or rent a flat in our block. It drives me up the wall because we are not moving.

Most recent was a letter addressed, by name, to Mr X Smith and Mrs Y Smith. Usually it’s just addressed to “Homeowner” and goes straight in the bin. Of if I can be bothered, and there’s an return address, I do a return to sender. No idea if it gets there but I hope it does and p****s them off :rotfl:

However this time I was curious and emailed the EA to ask where they had got our contact details. Turns out they downloaded details for all 41 flats from Land Registry! I asked them to remove our contact details that day which they confirmed they would do. Lo and behold, 10 days later we get another letter from same EA, now addressed to “Homeowner”. I sent them another email (this time somewhat less polite than my first one!) and they say that we’ve been removed from all databases.

If I got a personal letter I’d be more inclined to respond positively if wanted to move.
