Sometimes a dodgy valve can lead to an unexplained flat tyre. Sometimes the valve won't seal properly, and the tyre slowly goes flat. Pump it up again, and the valve might fully seal the second time.

I have now got into the habit of checking and pumping up the tyres at least a day before a long journey, so the tyre doesn't go flat while I'm driving along.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Jk0. First puncture was outside our house where it had been parked for several days, unused. Went out and found it flat. Bin men had just been down road and as usual, left mess behind. OH said there were some sharp bits of broken plastic nearby and in gutter and he assumed that was cause but thinking back he had not driven it since before that. He cleared plastic away. Yesterday he was dropping off a friend. Turned van round and as he drove off realised had flat tyre on same wheel as before. Nothing on road at friends. Now wondering if wheel rim is at fault.

    Yeah. Could be the rim.

Also, could be really spiteful person propping a nail up in front of tyre. Your tyre looks fine when you get in, but as soon as you move the car, nail goes into tyre and starts deflating it. You don't actually realise until a couple of miles down the road.

When this happened to me, I saw there were actually two nails puncturing tyre at same spot.
