I'm intrigued by this. How did you get a free car? And what does it run on, fresh air? Road tax, insurance....?

I can see how it's economical though! :rotfl:
Really, you don't know how? Just get to know plenty of folk in your own area, be open and honest with them, even help them out (paid of course, but not ripping anyone off) when they need some work done, and you'll find out soon enough!
Anyway, we're not talking about your high-end gas guzzling Discovery type though, think more of >10 year old grannys shopping car. Of course fuel, tax and insurance doesn't come free - and thats not what I said.

Hmmm.... you see, I do help people out, but don't expect anything back for it. I see it as being part of a community. It wouldn't even occur to me to then ask to borrow their car. If that's what you're saying of course (I'm not really sure what you are saying if I'm honest!)

Help folk by doing paid work for them, they get to know you and pass your details to their friends whom you help out too. I don't do it for free, need the cash, and they know it, and have had a multitude of things passed on to me as its too much hassel for them to get rid-of... and can even cost them money to get rid-of. Its not borrowing a car - I wouldn't go there either. It's getting a relitively old car given, signed over, V5 included. I'm on my second one in the last few years, couple of pals have got cars like this too. OK, you might get just another year or two out of it, but transport doesn't get much cheaper or cheerful!

Yes, but places are rationed. There was an extended piece on radio 4 this week where several universities were 'full' of Scottish students, but still had places for English students with lower grades than Scottish students who were being turned away.

Yep, I had a check at "clearing" vacancies near me, the universities own websites stated not for Scottish students, for English, Welsh, international students.

That's because Scottish clearing is earlier due to our exam results going out in August when everyone else goes out in September

Fuel is free round here if you have an electric car - free council charging points in every village :rotfl:

Which is handy if you're in one of those villages with a bus only every two hours :(
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Well, that goes for the same if you move to Wales or Ireland too, or even France or Spain.

Not once in the 3 years that I lived in West Wales did I ever experience hostility. Plenty of experience living & working in Scotland though.

That's besides the point though - I was answering the question that the OP posed, which was "am I missing anything" and I think attitude to "outsiders" should be considered when moving somewhere else.
