I think you live in the same village as me! They do not always turn up either and sometimes recently I have been turned away as they are full (although that has only happened on the way home).0 -
It's not about wanting the kids to have a certain life or lifestyle, they will find their own way in the end, its about the thought of them starting adulthood in massive debt. I don't think the taxpayer should pay for all these grants and benefits, but they do, so whats wrong with wanting some? But if you can’t afford to provide three kids with the life YOU want, why should the taxpayer do it?
Not trying to be funny; kids can have a great life, rich or poor. But it’s down to you and the other parent to provide that.
As for earning 14k a year. What are you doing to change that?
And my kids do have a great life, money is not a problem or issue to them (yet), they have a whale of a time kicking about at home and with their pals, and you'd think they were the happiest kids in the World if you were to actually know them, but, they'll grow up, and then getting a help up wouldn't hurt!
As for not having a job and husstling to get by, you'd be suprised how few husstling opportunities there are out there and how it doesn't come close to a cushty minimum wage!0 -

Do you own or rent your property? If owned how much equity do you have to be able to move that up here? Are you happy to move into a rental and spend what equity you have on rental fees? Whilst looking/securing work. If renting now do you have a deposit, possibly 6 months rent to secure the rental and give breathing space to find work.
Have you looked at areas in Scotland which appeal?
Then looked at rental/sale prices and what you get?
Have you looked at transport links?
What type of work do you do? Same for your OH.
How many kids do you have and how old are they? Asking this as kids do not always adapt to moving away from friends after a certain age.
What have your kids said they "want to be when they grow up"? Not all jobs need a degree and there are plenty of apprentice jobs so learning the job on the job and having day release to study (or internal study).
Open Uni does offer many courses and degrees, they can be done in sections, they have their own company for loans which are paid off as you go through the course and can be done round a day or evening job.
Aside from the freebies tempting you, what do you expect to gain by moving up here?
Is it better quality of life you want?
Is it a work/life balance?
Is there a hobby which you think will be more fullfilled up here?
What are your longterm dreams and wants and how can Scotland fullfil it over England or Wales or Ireland?
You say about windfarms and please do not take this the wrong way but working 40+ hours in a job you do not like, just to try and keep whatever the wage is, to fund the lifestyle you have knowing you HAVE to keep going is tiresome if you are maxed to the hilt and have no way of dropping to a lowerpaid job which would make you happy as every penny is needed.
Again, not to put you off, just to give you things to think about.
Thanks MovingForwards,
You really do put a lot of thought into your answers, and they are very appreciated.
My location, well, in the North, within 60 miles of the boarder to be more precise!
Moving house is not a problem, the finances of doing this are simple enough. Not looked into transport links, but as I bomb about in a free car, this is a very economical way to travel!
The type of work I do now is just jobbing, wife = cleaner. Although I might end up cleaning too as it seems more profitable and stable... Obviously, in the past things were different and I was in an industrial profession, but times have changed and opportunities a bit thin on the ground. But, that's why windfarms are of particular interest, and yes, I can imagine I'd be happy as a pig in muck dangling from a wind turbine for 40+ hours a week - honestly!
Biggest upset would be the kids uprooting though, would be hard to start over on making decent friends again, I should know, had quite a mobile childhood myself.
What do they want to do when they grow up? - Well, kids are kids so they haven't got a (sensible) clue, mind, it melts my heart to hear them say they want to be just like me and live day to day jobbing! Ha ha ha, if only it was that easy.
The idea of moving up to Scotland would be purely for freebies I'm afraid, I started this thread asking the question quite bluntly, I guess some might be disgusted by this but, well, life's too short to beat about the bush!?
Other than that, my long term dreams and wants - none, sorry, its just about survival for the forseeable...
As I said, thanks for the replies, from everyone actually, positive and negative. Lots of food for thought there and things to investigate.
Cheers,
Chipper0 -
Call it a cap if you prefer ...Places are not rationed at Scottish universities any more than anywhere else. There will be courses that are more difficult to get in but that will be the same all over the UK.

Problem with moving to Scotland is that at some point they will probably get independence. When this happens they won’t be able to afford a lot of these perks.0

Nonononono, if enough English people move to Scotland we can all vote No Thank You If You Don't Mind Awfully and defeat all future referenda on the issue. :rotfl:A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Well, that goes for the same if you move to Wales or Ireland too, or even France or Spain.bertiewhite wrote: »Hostility towards the English?
I'm sure if a Scots (or anyone) moved to my town and descovered they were now living in amongst a settled travellers community then they might also feel a bit uneasy, even hostility. No difference.0 -

Seems that most of my neighbours kids who have gone to uni in the last 10 years-or-so have graduated with huge debt and either are unemployed and living down the street again, or landed the best job they can in a call centre earning below the threshold which is needed to start paying their loans back. Too many useless courses out there. Too many unis making too much money from these useless courses and kids that don't know what to do next.
I think you're right.
So why are you then so keen on your children going to uni ?0
