We have used dehumidifiers to dry washing for several years now. It also has the advantage of reducing the room RH so overall for us much better than a tumble dryer.

    We have a couple of these, highly recommend it;

I use a dehumidifier - try Screwfix, they have a few decent models and some have a dedicated clothes drying mode.

    This is very good:

I've seen them go down to between 80 and 100 quid quite frequenty.

It won't be as quick as using a tumble dryer, but it will pay for itself as it'll cost much less to run.

Don't buy a small dehumidifier, they really don't work very well at all.

You need to spend at least £100 if you want one that works

They all make quite a bit of noise though.

Yeah, that kind of money is getting close to just buying a tumble dryer.

If you did buy a washer/dryer, what would you do with the landlords machine?

I haven't really thought about it. I guess I'd have it taken away or something?

A dehumidifier would be more cost effective to run.

The landlord won't want to remove it and then have to find storage for it until you leave.

I'm not sure if it helps (or is completely irrelevant!) but I don't have a tumble-dryer (or any radiators) so drying clothes in winter was always a bit of an issue.

A year or two back I got a dehumidifier, which I point at the rack of drying clothes, and it really dries them quickly without the house getting damp.

    Just a thought...

It's what I use also (I have radiators).

Is it just you? Is it really that inconvenient to only run a machine every other day? I might be a mucky beggar but if I was doing a load a day it'll be for about 3 items at a time.

Well that was a bit of an exaggeration, but since I no longer have a dryer I can only wash as many clothes as I can fit on the airer I have and I can't wash another load until everything on the airer is dry. In this time I have worn more clothes so the laundry pile gets bigger.

It's quite a slow way of getting through the laundry since previously I could put a load in and a few hours later take it out dry, iron it, put it away and immediately start another load. In one day I could wash and dry about 3-4 loads of laundry but now it takes about a week to do that.

I got one of heated airers from Lakeland, with the cover to keep the heat inside and really like it. You can also fold it away when not in use.

Did you ask the letting agent why they only bought a washing machine? What did they say?

Yes, I mentioned it after the new machine was installed and was told that was the decision the landlord had made. I chased it up as well but they didn't budge or seem to care really.

People with dehumidifiers - how much quicker do they help dry clothes as opposed to just hanging them on an airer?

(As an aside I don't have the most sympathetic landlord. Around this time last year the boiler broke so there was no heating or hot water in the flat. It took 8 weeks to get replaced and then constant hounding from me to get any kind of compensation for it. I'm in Scotland btw)
