Buying parents council house

Hi all,

My parents have suggested to myself and my partner that due to the right to buy, they are contemplating moving out of there current council house where they have lived for 25 years and us buying it. We would use this as our long term home and would have no quick intention of selling it.

What I want to know is can my parents nominate me or something similar for this, or is it only available to the current tenants (my parents) and we would have to do something like a joint mortgage or something else?

Thanks in advance.

No, THEY have the right to buy not you!
  • Yeah, just get mum 'n dad to move out & you move in, don't bother informing council and then after a year (yes - at least a year!) apply for RTB with council

I see, thanks. That would get round the having to have lived there for the 12 month and eligibility part!!

Then after 12 months, I would just apply to buy the property with my partner?
  • No you can’t buy it.

If you did, where would your mum and dad live anyway?

No because your parents are the tenants therefore they are the ones with the right to buy, not you. If you live with your parents for 12 months then you could make a joint application with your parents to exercise their right to buy. If a mortgage is required your parents will have to be named on the mortgage.

I do wonder if these threads pop up just to wind people up.

OP, the entitlement is for your parents to buy, not you. If they aren't in a position to buy, then wait 5 years (or lose discount, I think that is the term) before selling to you, then end of.
