Autoglass for side window replacement?

First Anniversary Combo Breaker First Post
Hello folks,

I had an attempted break-in on my car last week. They've damaged (chipped) the driver's window quite substantially, and I think it's worth getting replaced - mainly because the car is fairly new (3,5 yrs) and I intend to sell soon.

Has anyone used Autoglass for a side window, as opposed to a windscreen? Any good? I'm concerned about getting the panels on and off more than anything else, and whether they'll do a good job.

`cheers.

Isn't the insurance sorting this out for you?

They do all the glass in cars not just windscreens, 2 or 4 door is almost diy job.

Funnily enough, the car was in for a service this week and I tried to get a price. The dealer said they can supply windows, but they don't fit them.

Haven't contacted the insurer yet. Last time I had a (windscreen crack) I just booked the whole thing through Autoglass themselves, who in turn liased with the insurer.

If you have fully comp. insurance, then you probably have window cover as standard.

You may have to pay an excess (a few tens of pounds). It doesn't normally affect your NCB, but check your policy documents.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I'd trust them, having had similar a couple of times. It's their day job after all, unlike the dealer. And the dealer would probably have to get the glass from Autoglass.

They did well for me following a break-in to my last car. Came to my house to fit it and as I'd left the insecure car locked in the garage, collected the keys from a neighbour, returned them afterwards and did a very good job.

Price was surprisingly reasonable too - I'd expected much worse for an electric side window but the insurers did deal with it as part of the overall claim. IIRC the window excess was a lot smaller than the standard policy excess.

Had a fixed side window (3 door car) replaced on my insurance by Autoglass when the kids next door smashed it with one of their toys. Can't say I was very impressed as he scratched the body work and the bit of foam the window was mounted on was all twisted. If I were to use them again I'd supervise them and make more of a fuss over a shoddy job as I let it slide at the time.

I've had a door window smashed by flying debris from workers clearing a motorway verge. Fixed by Autoglass with no issues except that they could have done a better job of hovering up the remnants of the old, toughened, glass.

Not in defence of them, vacuuming the car weekly, you would still find bits of glass months later.
