You're asking locals to compete with commuters and pay the maximum possible a landlord can charge. I'm sure some of them can, but they shouldn't have to in their own home towns.

The private rental market has failed a generation and must be dismantled.

I was shocked at how expensive rental houses are. When I was looking for somewhere to rent myself - I’ve ended up in a much smaller run down house than the one I have left behind .

If the private rental market is dismantled then where are the people who aren't in a position to buy (for dozens of reasons) going to live? The social housing situation is already in meltdown

You have no way of knowing how many of those locals are commuting. You also don't know the rent levels you are making assumptions based on nothing. You are also not making allowances for people whose bought homes have been damaged by floods or fire who need to rent while their bought homes are being repaired. This is basically what happens if you believe what you read in the media.

When you read the media you get the impression that all people rent because they can't afford to buy. There are a lot of people who rent from choice because that suits their lifestyle at that time.

I don't see why they shouldn't be able to have somewhere to rent just because you don't agree with them renting. We need housing choices. We need rental properties for people so relocations are easier than they used to be. What people used to have to do is for the children and one parent to stay in the family house while the other parent lived in a bed and breakfast hotel during the week often for months and months commuting home at weekends while they sold the family home and looked for another to buy in the new area. Now what they can do is to sell their family home and move into rented in the new area while they look for another house to buy. The whole family gets to stay together. However you want to deprive people of their choice to do this an have them go back to the split up families again.

Labour government will fix all these problems.

    I wouldn't hold your breath.

Interestingly, today the Tories mentioned allowing councils to borrow money to build council housing.
In the USA they have "Municipal Bonds" the public can buy. Considered low risk (and maybe tax free?). For some reason we don't have these in the UK. Presumably because all money lent to the government, goes through the central government "Gilt" system.

I was joking, they will make things worse, but in the long run that could fix the problem of high house prices with a bond market crisis and bank run or two with maybe emergency interest rates thrown in? Maybe I will still vote for them......:)

Labour have stated they have plans for dealing with a "run on the pound"....

I'm not sure if these plans involve anything more than raising interest rates.

I suspect the government of whatever party wants to trash the pound. They've been doing it since 1914, so why change now?
