Erroneous AEO

In my latest payslip, I noticed a deduction for 'Fines AEO'. I hadn't even heard this term until yesterday, but now I've looked into it it makes no sense.

From what I understand, an AEO happens after you've already had a CCJ and failed to make payment on it; in addition, I would have received N56 paperwork. So here's where it makes no sense: I haven't got a CCJ. I checked my credit report, nothing on it about a CCJ. In addition, I also know I have no debts like that. So I haven't got a CCJ. I never received any paperwork regarding a debt and, whilst I have moved recently, it's only been out of my parents house and into my own, so if anything was going to an old address it would just be going there and I'd have still got it.

For the moment, I'm assuming my work payroll made the error and they're looking into it, but they're taking their time and I'm the meantime I'm still quite concerned. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Check all 3 of your credit files for a start not just one of them.
  • I have done, and paid to search the online registry. I don't have a CCJ.

Could also be a court fine or council tax repayment

Speak to your payroll team - they will know exactly what it's for.
  • But I've never had a court fine, and my council tax is all good - I actually went to the council office to check today. I legitimately can't even think what it could be.

Only the payroll can answer the question as to why they've taken payment - they should be able to show the initiating order they received and you can take it further from that point.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Easily solved, wasn't mean for me - payroll put it on my pay instead of the person they intended it to be for.
