Win 10 update

My laptop has suffered the latest update, and is very slow on starting up. Fortunately though, I still have Firefox, some people said they couldn't load it after the latest update, and after a bit of fiddling about, I've got Classic Shell working alright.

However, on wading through the apps, and uninstalling some I don't need, I've found that I've got about 16 x Microsoft Visual C+, ranging from 2005 to 3013. Simply, do I need all of them?

  • Are you sure Windows has fully completed the update? There is a huge amount of data that needs "shuffling around" with a Win 10 update, plus possibly yet more parts to the update that are still ongoing.

Once it has fully finished the update, you could try de-cluttering with a program like the free CCleaner. No guarantees though...

Have you enough RAM? The minimum is 4GB.

My laptop got unbearably slow with the last win 10 update.
It was always saying something wasn't responding and taking ages to load and get on the Internet.
I have an old Toshiba laptop from 2010. Everywhere, a member on here suggested that as long as my laptop was mechanically sound, which it is, upgrading the RAM from 2GB to either 4GB or 6GB and changing from hdd to sdd would make a huge difference.
I have only upgraded the RAM to 6GB at the moment as I am still waiting for the drive to come but it is already so much better and no problem at all now with firefox which kept crashing out.

6GB? Is that the max your laptop can take? Or is it a typo and you meant 8GB?

No, not a typo. It already had 2GB, I just bought a 4GB and installed it in the spare slot. It could take more but I don't need anymore. I don't use it for gaming or anything. If I decide to later I could swap the 2GB for another 4GB but am quite happy as it is.

You haven't answered my question, and why should you query if the Win 10 update has finished?

Because Windows updates are frequently a series of updates, followed by individual programs, anti-virus, etc. updating. The whole Windows update process is a constant churning...

Linux is a lot less bother, but that's another issue.

Which version of Windows are you on? To check, type winver into the Start menu and press enter. An "About Windows" box should appear, showing your version then build number in brackets.

The latest version was released last night, version 1809. So if you've only just updated to 1803, then there is yet another update on it's way to you.

You can try and force the download and installation of 1809 by typing update into the Start menu and selecting "Check for updates". From the Windows Update page, press the grey "Check for updates" button.

But before checking for updates, I would strongly recommend running Disk Clean-up. This will make a little more space for the update, as several computers only have 32GB of storage. To do this, type in disk clean and then right click on "Disk Clean-up" and choose "Run as Administrator". After a few minutes, you will have a window with a small list of checkboxes to tick. I personally tick all of these and hit Ok.

Bear in mind that Disk Clean-up can take some time to finish. On computers with hard drives and slow CPUs, possibly an hour or more. But expect it to take around 30 minutes to clean.
