Just looking at your last 12 months you have a fantastically high consumption - over 16000 day unit and 4500 night and all of this is being charged at a standard tariff and £4400 a year. Changing supplier could save you £1750 a year - thats WOW

I see you have a daughter with special needs and a family member as a carer. No doubt this results in the house being occupied all the time but is there any special equipment which is resulting your very high day time use.

What is the meter make and model and what type of timer switch is used to switch the rates over. They can be Radio teleswitch, old analogue 24 hr circular timer or a digital meter with a built in timer.
Watch out for digital Eco 7 meters. They can have three readings displayed, day/night and a total of the two which should never be used with Eco 7 billing at all even if the supplier can total them together and bill single rate.
Finding out just when the cheap 7 hrs is in operation will help with lowering your bills not wasting money.
As stated by Robin9 you are paying too much and blowing money hand over fist on SVT.Npower have a high standing charge as well
eg. Current Eco 7 tariff at Yorkshire Energy on their Green Badger Eco 7 Oct 2019 fix is day rate at 12.55p/kwh night rate 12.10 p/kwh and 18p a day standing charges. There are others even cheaper depending on night rate consumption percentages
I work for BG and other suppliers meter reading and transposing the day/night is extremely common.
If Npower have been routinely doing that for years they share responsibility and should not be back billing the full amount. I have known EDF to scrub all the charges once a customer complains.
My back of a fag packet estimate of yearly consumption is a little higher than Robin9 s at a total of over 23000 kwh s a year, with a low percentage of night units used as well.
Night storage heater users usually consume at least 50 % of the total on the night rate.
  • There are no storage heaters, it is oil for the heating and water (although the immersion may occasionally have been used). It is a 4 bedroom property. The meter shows at bottom AC WATTHOUR METER, also I see IPH 2W on it Class 2.0, FLOTON Magnetic bearing, Sangamo weston ltd, enfield, middx, written on it. At the top it shows LOW and underneath NORMAL then a disc than moves around (but no third reading I can see).
  • So, who should I approach now to study the bills, and overrule everyone (Npower and Ofgem) if possible?
  • Try and prove by a closer look at the units used and the billing that Npower meter readers or their billing system has transposed the bills. Suppliers will routinely back bill from this without saying exactly where the bill is generated from. If its their meter readers and their billing procedure at fault then they can be liable to have to lower their demands or even scrub it.
i have seen cases on here where suppliers such as EDF scrubbed many years transposed Eco 7 reads.
It looks like you have an old analogue Sangamo Weston meter which is virtually impossible to transpose with the night rate clearly at the top and day underneath it. Meter readers don t normally get those wrong unlike the digital meters with rate 1 and rate 2 displayed for the day and night reads.
The old meters timerswitch can be controlled by RadioTeleswitch ( always correct ) or the 24 hr circular timer ( nearly always out of kilter )

So, who should I approach now to study the bills, and overrule everyone (Npower and Ofgem) if possible?

You keep referring to Ofgem when, in fact, I think you mean The Energy Ombudsman. By going to arbitration, you have agreed to accept or reject this:

    The Ombudsman’s Final Decision

7.1 If at any stage during the process of the Ombudsman’s investigation both the complainant and the relevant Participating Company accept any conclusion reached or decision made then such will become the binding settlement of the dispute.

7.2 If either the complainant or the relevant Participating Company or both do not accept any conclusion reached or decision made, then the Ombudsman will issue a Final Decision, or, as indicated in the relevant annex, a recommendation, including his or her reasons therefore. Such Final Decision or recommendation shall be made after considering any representations the complainant or the relevant Participating Company or both may make in relation to the investigation report and suggested remedies.

Your only option now is take a legal route; however, any Court will take into account the Energy Ombudsman's (EO) Decision. Before going down the arbitration route is important to think through the outcome that you seek, and to make sure that the The EO is presented with all the evidence that you have at your disposal.

If you have formally rejected The EO's Decision, then the supplier is free to bill you without any further discussion or compensation. The only authority that can over-rule The EO is a Court.

This gets worse and worse - this explains the very low night use @21% - usually the breakeven is around 35/40% although some of the new suppliers have very similar day and night rates. That's another £500 a year you've been throwing away.

Have you an explanation for the very high day use of 16000 units ?

  • Hi,
Thanks for all responses. I will need to check whether what I generally use on a daily basis relates to the amount of units you believe I am using.

Also, when Ombud came back to me with the decision of £100 compensation for poor customer service, I was so disgusted in their decision I ignored their decision, their second letter a few weeks later asking me to confirm this is acceptable again which I ignored. Then finally a few weeks later (probably 2 months ago) saying as there was no response from me that whas their decision (the £100 compensation) and that's that.

I don't know whether I "accepted" their decision by not responding - I certainly didnt say to Ombud (or Npower) that I accepted Ombud decision - does this mean I still have recourse or are you saying legal is only way fwd in which case I will go and see a solicitor about whether they will deal with (initially with a free half hour advice session) or CAB - any thoughts? Thanks everyone for your assistance.

Also see if you can determine what time the meter changes from low to normal rate and vice versa. Should be 0830 and 0130 this time of year.
