    It sounds as if you are in good time for applying to HMRC for a refund, assuming that your scenario is that:

    (a)  First you bought a new property, intending to live in it as your main home, but had to pay the extra 3% SDLT because you retained your own home.

    (b)  Afterwards, but within three years, you sold your old home, which you had lived in as your only or main residence within the three years leading up to the purchase of your new home.

    There is a time limit of 12 months from the later sale within which to submit the application for a refund.

    Thanks everyone phoned Gov.U.K. Stamp duty dept and they gave it to me.
    Thanks for this - I am about to claim a refund and didn't have the SDLT number. The guy on the SD line was so helpful even sending me a link to the calculator. All the info I needed in a few minutes which was wonderful :-)
