Broadband speed (how can I go faster)

I just bought a new laptop and was about to make a start on getting connected to the internet, I used my current P.C. to get the server details as instructed by the helpfull staff at Comet. Trouble is while viewing my account details with Orange I saw a link for broadband speed test and thought why not give it a try. Result wasn't good at all
SPEED DOWN 129.91 Kbps
SPEED UP 376.08 Kbps
I thought my old P.C. was to blame for very slow internet browsing but is it purely just because I have a naff speed?
Can I do anything to gain more speed, change provider or something, anything, please help!

Thanks Millionare, tried the test again
speed down 131 Kbps
speed up 380 Kbps
slightly better but not a lot, is this a really slow speed and is it likely to change if I swap provider?0 -
Have a look at this it may help - https://www.dslreports.com/tweaks0

It says not to tweak if using windows Vista or a satellite, scared me off so I don't think I'll bother. Anyway Al Mac thinks this is a decent speed so I think I'll just settle for it, thanks anyway folks.;)0

1Mg from Orange for £17.99 but just found out this morning after speaking to them that I could actually upgrade to their home starter package for £12.99 and get 2Mg.
Another 1Mg for a fiver less, (BARGAIN). Strange though they never bothered to contact me and let me know I was paying more for less. This is why I want to change but not sure who to go with, anyone got any suggestions.0 -
Orange are total c**p when it comes to customer service. Avoid !0

How much do you downlaod a month?
I use newnet and they have a broad range with various download limits, the good thing is that regrdless of the package they give up to 8mb for ther same price - https://www.newnet.co.uk0 -
Have you checked what speed your line actually allows you before commiting to a faster deal elsewhere when you line cannot support it?0
