The various providers vary with this issue. Virgin is probably the most restrictive in that they are likely to want the box to be physically returned to them.

Your new setup will be entirely separate from your Virgin box, so you could run them beside each other for a period in order to watch any VM recordings.

I presume Virgin are similar to Sky in that as soon as your subscription ends so too does the recording and playback facilities of the box.
