Updating either Samsung GT-19100 or Moto G (2nd Generation) XT1068

Is it possible for a Samsung GT-19100 or a Moto G (Second Generation) to be updated so that it can handle a lot, if not all, of the latest apps?
If not, can anyone recommend an up to date sub £100 (maybe sub £150 at a push) smartphone with a reasonable-ish camera and an sd expansion slot?
Thanks!

I repartitioned mine to provide a lot more space for installed apps, and then installed Lineage OS on it (which is a modern up-to-date Android OS). It's brilliant -- much better than the default OS.

Sounds very interesting but I’m asking for someone else and not sure how feasible such a tekkie solution is.
Thinking about it, he does need his mobile phone and, although he can save the content, not sure about the situation if the tekkie solution goes wrong?
While keeping this as an option, can anyone recommend a specific model of phone or a good outlet for new or refurbished mobile phones?0 -
