This is a great example of why things like Borrow My Doggy are not as simple as they might first seem.

There's no problem with BMD here - it's the other owner refusing to claim on his insurance who is creating the issue.

I disagree, the owner dog was badly injured by someone’s cat that it would never ever have come into contact with otherwise. They left their dog with a stranger thinking it was going to get a walk and a play and it came back with a serious injury that could have cost its sight, probably needs weeks of aftercare (eye injuries need a lot) and a huge vet bill.

I’m not saying it was the OP’s fault, they didn’t intend for it to happen and they clearly feel bad, but if it wasn’t for a business encouraging people to leave their animals with strangers, none of it would harvest happened!

I wouldn't leave Gitdog with a complete stranger the first time I met them, even if they had come through a site like BorrowMyDoggy.
I wonder how many people don't read the full terms and conditions before they sign up.
He needs to claim on his insurance, accidents happen, it's what it's for. You haven't been negligent, it's not as if your cat goes round terrorising the neighbourhood dogs. Don't get into any further debate with him, you might end up digging yourself a big hole.

ETA - given that the owner has misled you once already, my cynical mind is also wondering if he's planning to claim off the insurance and play off your guilt to get the cash off you as well. If he's asking you for the money directly rather than paid to the vet then it would be easy enough to get away with.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Two weeks ago I went to meet a dog. I thought it would just be a quick meet for the owner to see me and check that he thought I was ok to look after his dog.

It ended up that he wanted me to look after the dog for 3 hours that day.

BMD's T&Cs are quite clear - you have to actually join up - no-one comes round and twists your arm.

In this case, the owner was happy to hand their treasured pet to a complete stranger on first meeting.

Which was clearly a bad idea, but presumably not something against policy?

Anyway, we can agree to disagree!

I have Petplan insurance and it's really straightfoward. There is no reason for him not to claim unless he's let his insurance lapse (in which case the bmd insurance might kick in). It all sounds very odd, tbh!

Accidents happen. That it was your cat that did it was unfortunate but it could also have been another dog in a park running over the causing an injury. Some dogs may have retaliated to the cat attack with a swift bite and then there's be an even sadder story here today. I honestly think you can't engage with this person any more. He wanted free day car. He didn't get it. (most day care only have 3rd party insurance and you need your own for accidents and injuries anyway)

This was my first thought as well.....In fact we pulled out of a potential adoption (done through proper channels) as it became clear to us before the meeting that the owners were prepared to hand over the Dog without even considering if we were suitable.

(As just in case anyone raises it the only occasion we've used dog walkers, the walkers came recommended & grilled us before taking the mutt for his walkers)
  • Thank you, yes it's true that it could have happened in another way, I j7st feel doubly guilty that the accident happened when the dog was with me, as well as the fact that it was my cat.

I haven't been answering his calls, just letting them go to voicemail. I also feel bad about this, but it does make me feel upset and it does seem that he only wants to discuss money.
  • How often is he ringing? From your post above it sounds like it's regularly.

  • To be honest he just rings me with updates when the dog has been to the vet. It's just that the conversation always mentions money, for example on Thursday the first thing he said was that he had to pay the vet bill and now he was overdrawn.
