HSBC new current account opening woes

  • I have applied for a Monzo account and my card is hopefully on my way. Thanks for suggestions everyone. I would wait for HSBC to contact me if they need anything from my side of they have finally received some response from their internal teams. I have been told that I can receive my salary with Monzo, Starling and quite a few other digital banks since they actually open a sort of Current Account of their own. I will receive my salary in Monzo this month and see if it's convenient enough for me.

I was in a similar situation when I moved to the UK (not having formal proof of address) and my local Santander branch gave me the run-around as well. That said, HSBC are known to be slow even when you have all the proper documents so things might take a bit longer than usual for you.

I was going to recommend Monzo or Starling, as they only need a UK postal address rather than formal proof of address, but it seems others have already suggested it. They are full UK current accounts with the same protections as a regular high street bank, so should serve your needs short term until HSBC is open and they can generate you a statement you can use as proof of address to move elsewhere, if you desire..
  • Yup. Already applied for account with Monzo.

Applied online to open this account over a week ago, vague message appeared once I'd entered all my details. Assumed a rejection. I also selected a date mid-October to switch my donor First Direct account.

On Saturday morning (?) get an email with my 'Welcome Pack' and their 'account opening guarantee'.
Your new HSBC debit card, plus any cheque book you’ve requested will be delivered to your home address within five working days and your PIN within seven working days. In fact, we’re so sure of this, we’ll give you £10 if they’re delayed.

Today is day 1/5 for the debit card being a no show and day 1/7 for the PIN being a no show.

Is this how anyone else has experienced their account opening?
  • just in case if someone stumbles upon on this thread, I received a call from HSBC today (19th October for an application which was completed on 25th august) and I was told that they are performing some checks hence it MAY take more time than usual timeline for an account opening. Take that

I'm 7 weeks into an application and only just got the account open, they've lost the money i transferred from Halifax, 3 phone calls later and they've admitted to a banking error on their part, received £30 compensation today as an apology for the poor service from the call centre staff, they are now supposed to be investigating where the money has gone, they told me it had been sent to a dormant account and now it seems it is in a suspended account meanwhile i still don't have the money.
