Tie Rod End costs

My car failed its MOT, so needed the work doing, was charged the below price for the work including the labour:

LH and OSF Tie Rod End/Track Rod End - 161.30
Wheel Alignment - 34.99 (needed)

Also, on top of the quote for the service i had at the same time they said my car needed special oil at an extra cost of 29.99 for the oil.

As it was booked online, they asked for my reg no, and then gave me a price. Then when I got to the centre (In and Out Garage), they added this charge. Surely if they know my reg at the point of ordering they would have known if i needed special oil. The car is a 62 plate 1.6 Tdi Mondeo

Something does not add up with these people. Want to leave them a review as they have asked me to do one, but want to see if they are overcharging first.

  • So was the 161.30 just for the tie rod ends or for a MoT, service and tracking as well; it is not clear.

The 161.30 was for the tie rod ends and tracking was 34.99 on top of that (£195.96 for both). The service and MOT was extra.

Track rods for a mondeo are dirt cheap about £30 for a pair maybe even cheaper and its a very easy job to change them over i personally would not have paid 161 for them even if it includes labour

the tracking is not a bad price i get 4 wheel laser alignment done for £30 and im in the north
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

I paid £79 for mine done on my Mondeo and tracking was included in the price because doing the tracking is part of the job when changing a track rod end.

I used the In and Out Garage in Leeds, the MOT was dirt cheap at £25; but they were going to charge double what another garage did the work for.
It was a bottom ball joint, and they said tracking needed doing too, not in my book.

If the joint was properly made to spec, it wouldn't- but the quality of the "OEM" spares nowadays you are lucky if the wheelbase is still the same on both sides now :D

That Ford/PSA 1.6 diesel does need to be fed the exact right low-ash oil, regularly, else expensive woes will occur. So the question is only one of communication, not over-charging.
  • If you do the tie rod job right, mark the threads and count the number of turns when taking the old tie rod off, you can just screw on the new tie rod to the same position and the tracking won't have changed.

    Wrong.

Depends on the angle of the starting thread. You could be close to 1 turn out if the start of the thread is a few degrees out.

Also the length of the arm varies between manufacturers and batches. Dont forget manufacturers often change suppliers during production runs.

Assuming the new tierod's thread lead-in is PRECISELY the same as the old one... Which you certainly can't guarantee.
