He got it for his first year (sorry I will go and edit that bit of the post if I can), and when I just googled whether you have to re-apply each year, it says in some circumstances it is renewed for you - I haven't had chance to check those circumstances yet.

Sorry, probably not making a lot of sense. Been trying to get a decision out of him for ages, but with him refusing to discuss it, and so it's just got left and left.

Now I am very worried - I have not any wriggle room, every penny coming in goes out, if I lose even a few pounds of housing benefit right now, I will be struggling to meet rent and utilities. Trouble is, he buries his head even further if I try and push him on finding a job or sorting benefits, or feels guilty if I tell him how difficult things are for me, and this makes him start to feel like it would be better off if he was no longer around (and I don't mean living at home, or locally, I mean living at all)

He doesn't sound like he is well enough to apply for temp jobs if he is in that frame of mind. I think you need to gently push the fact that the sooner you get the issue sorted about what he needs to do re his student status and when he can apply for benefits that this will take some pressure off of you

I suffer from anxiety myself and I have had depression so I know how that effects your frame of mind and your motivation.
