Under active thyroid

I think this is the form that you need to fill in to notify the DVLA or you could ring them.

No doubt they will contact your doctor/consultant for information.
It is a blow to know that you can't drive for a while but hopefully it won't be too long. Do investigate the eye patch option as this may allow you to drive once you have adjusted to wearing it.
PIP is a no no at the moment as you have to have had the condition affecting your daily needs for 3 months and for 9 months in the future. Put simply, I suspect you have no more 'needs' than someone who can't drive.
However, do investigate whether there is any help for travel costs in your circumstances.0 -
pmlindyloo Thanks so much for this, read the form phoned the eye hospital and they are going to attempt for fit another prism on Monday, for the vision out of the side of my affected eye.0

I was so upset she went to ask her superior if I could drive, she came back and said no. I understand a lot of people have an under active thyroid, my problem is that it has affected my eyes.
You havent been told you cant drive at all you've been told to hold off while your vision isn't great. No different to being told to hold off driving when you have a c section.... once you're eyesight is better you'll be able to drive. I wouldnt even bother telling the dvla to be honest.
i couldn't drive last year because of mobility problems. i didn't rush for a bus pass or benefit. i waited until i was well enough again. It sounds like they are expecting your vision to improve so i wouldnt worry unecessarilyLast bet : 26th Oct 2006:j Debt free 25th Feb 2008:j Living "my" dream:T0 -
information here https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving.
You should inform DVLC if you have been advised to stop driving for 3 months or more or have a notifiable health condition.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -
Having had Hypothyroidism for 24 years, visiting the Hospital yearly for blood tests which normally leads to a change of dosage of Thyroxine, I have never heard of Eye Disease from Hypothyroidism.
I have googled and it does say that Thyroid Eye Disease can happen if you have Graves Disease (I do) but that treatment with Thyroxine will keep it at bay, it is not a notifiable condition that the DVLA make us aware of.

I cannot see how you would qualify for PIP either Mobility or Care when it states that it can be a temporary condition.information here https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving.

Posted that link yesterday, Hypothyroidism is not an illness that needs to be reported. If the hospital have told her not to drive for three months instead of 'hold off' driving for awhile then yes she needs to report it, otherwise, don't drive until your eyesight is better, and forget PIP.0 -
Apologies bspm, missed that you'd posted the link yesterday.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0

Double vision is a condition notifiable to DVLA https://www.gov.uk/diplopia-and-driving
Now that you've been told by a doctor to not drive and notify DVLA you need to do that - you won't be insured to drive until the DVLA have told you that you're ok to drive. It doesn't mean they'll say not to it just means that they'll need to ensure you're safe to drive0 -
You need to inform the DVLA who will write to your orthoptist to work out your level of double vision corrected and uncorrected. They'll possibly ask for your stereoscopic vision (3D vision) to be tested with your new prism and for the visual field test I mentioned earlier. If all that checks out you'll be back on the road fairly soon.
I can't stress enough but don't patch either of your eyes yourself under any circumstances. It used to be thought that stereoscopic vision was set in stone in childhood at around 8 years old unless something catastrophic happened like a stroke or a brain tumour but evidence has come through showing that adults can induce amblyopia (a lazy eye) by inappropriately patching off their eyes. If you have double vision and no 3D vision you'll likely be revoked for 6 months as if you've lost an eye. If your license is revoked and not voluntarily surrendered you have to go through medical services to get your license back and the wait for this is months (there's a thread on the disability board, some people wait 8 months on top of the length of their medical ban).0 -
