I have an under active thyroid. Does yours affect he ability to care for yourself, make meals, do personal hygiene and walk further than 100 metres?
An incorrect medication level or left untreated, an under active thyroid has the power to put someone in a coma/hospitalise at times, it's why this condition ensures someone has a medical exemption certificate so I'm unsure why you would make light of it.
Depression symptoms can be put down to an under active thyroid if you are so unlucky. You wouldn't dream of telling someone with diagnosed depression that they could look after themselves I'm sure so it's no different.
Centuries ago, people thrown into Asylums actually tested positive for under active thyroid, so I well believe vision and eye probs.0 -
Thanks Deleted User - I have been feeling really down lately and the final straw was being told I couldn't drive. My life and am I sure many others depend on being able to drive. Hopefully I will get better but in the mean time I have a lot of adaptions to make.0

I can tell from my "mood" how well my thyroid medication is doing. Since my thyroid went underactive I have gone from doing fine to feeling depressed all dependant on how my thyroid is. It was hitting the cr****r 2 years ago before I finally persuaded a doctor that I needed more & unfortunately we seem to be heading in the same direction again although in a minor fashion only. But I am at the age when significant changes are expected to happen.
If the OP can get properly balanced then maybe their problems will disappear.
This is one of the (very few) things where the US may be a little better as the base lines they use are significantly higher that the ones the UK uses, so we aren't always fighting the wellbeing/weight battle, because if you have a thyroid problem it is always a battle whatever they may tell you.
When you are first diagnosed it feels great, you starve yourself (I'm talking 400-600 calories a day) to get the weight off. Before diagnosis I was putting weight on at 600 calories a day and breaking even at 400. Basically I lived on coffee & lettuce.
The interesting thing is that back then I knew no-one with a thyroid problem, apart from my father who had an overactive one, now I know lots - all since mine went. And the paranoid bit - all since Chernobyl & the meat that shouldn't have left either Scotland or Wales but we all know did.0 -
They told you to contact the dvla not that they would ban you from driving. A family member was born with a rare squint that gives them double vision when tired. They've learned to adjust it.
When they passed their driving licence, they made an appointment to their gp and then ophthalmologist who confirmed as its been posted, that they are entitled to drive as long as it isn't affecting them when looking to the side to pass a car for instance.0 -
I’m aware of how under active thyroid can stop people doing things but surely with the medication you will be able to manage.
Does your deaf sister have other health issues. I’m deaf myself but I don’t qualify because I have a hearing aid ( which doesn’t help much). They automatically give 2 points for hearing aid that’s it. Most deaf people get it because they have other health issuesMortgage free wannabe

I do not think anyone, and certainly not Sncjw has made light of Hypothyroidism, seems Sncjw suffers from it too.
The original post, titled, 'under active thyroid' asked if she could claim PIP with that condition and being told not to drive, subsequent post stating she had been told to contact DVLA.
I speak as someone who has had this contrition for nearly half a century, it is not pleasant, it does affect life in general but, when treated correctly it is a very manageable condition and not one requiring either components of PIP.0 -
Fbaby If only that was so, they told me to "hold off" from driving and to contact the DVLA. Does that mean to stop driving or not. I was so upset she went to ask her superior if I could drive, she came back and said no. I understand a lot of people have an under active thyroid, my problem is that it has affected my eyes.0
