Boiler needs replacing - Is it the previous engineers fault?

It's probably a number of components below the leak also affected. I could see a repair being uneconomic on an 8 year old combi, fix this and wait for the next fault.
There are a lots of ifs in that. Just because there has been a leak is not a definitive on the boiler being us. After 20 years in the oil industry water and electrics mix often!
I would call a second gas engineer in. My experience over many years is they vary greatly.0 -

The OP cannot take it any further. They did not commission the person to service the boiler. The OP has no traction.
The condition of it is probably worth a second opinion before replacing.
Maybe he is nice, how would I know. I am not married to him!
I did not say he had to do anything, in fact in my other posts I said the opposite. Its worth a try. It sometimes works for me.0 -

This is what you said:scd3scd4 wrote:Would he come back and fix the leak as good will for you not to take it further.
You suggested using leverage (a nicer word than blackmail) which wouldn't work because the OP cannot take it further. There is no leverage.
Threatening someone with something that you can't do isn't going to work. It has a habit of getting the opposite result to the one you want; no matter how sweetly you try to put it, it is a threat.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

No, the OP told us the "engineer" rang him back but he missed the call. Who knows why. Maybe he feels guilty, maybe not.
Another OP suggested checking if he is even registered, maybe he is, maybe he is not. That's not blackmail or a threat in my book. And you don't know either, like us all.
The "engineer" may not be legally liable but he is sure not someone I would use if he is too lazy to mention water ingress on a boiler report 6 years running. This may be leverage. This does not have to mean legally. I don't know how seriously the body he is registered to would feel about hes performance. Maybe he works for a company, I wonder what they would think. If he is not registered then that is leverage. And that is neither blackmail or a threat.

No, it works sometimes and does not others. I have a pretty good success rate working out when to and when not to. Many tradesman/woman are at their heart decent people who want to do a decent job and have repeat customers and happy clients. Like I said, it cost nothing to try.0 -
I had someone else look at it and I'll just have to keep repairing it over and over again. It's not a great boiler in the first place and due to how it's been treated over the years it's gone. I'm having it replaced. It'll cost me more in the long run to keep repairing it.
Learnt my lesson, service paperwork doesn't mean diddly!!.. I thought I did my due diligence but I guess overlooked some things.0 -

I did speak to him when he called back and he told me this whole back story about how he would tell the customer to fix the leak and she never did. But why this wasn't mentioned on the paperwork is beyond me! I wouldn't put my name to things not done properly... I think he was happy to keep coming back and making some quick £££0 -
All the best.0

Hardly, theres not a lot of money in servicing a gas boiler once a yearNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0
