Equifax report shows inaccurate details - what next?

Hi,

Just decided to try out the free Equifax credit report.

I looked at my credit report. Everything's reported as without problems on the credit report, however there are a few inaccuracies which I wonder should I take any action:

1. I have recently upgraded my LTSB credit card to LTSB Airmiles Duo. On my credit report it still shows up the old number. In my Internet Banking, both of these credit cards still show up. Should I tell LTSB about it, ask them to close off my old credit card account (which I am not using anymore), and ask them to update my details on the CRAs?

2. My Natwest current account showed up as a wrong number. Should I pop into branch and talk to one of the customer agents; or should I correspond using letters? To complicate things further, I am planning to request them to upgrade my account to their Student Account - should I do this upgrading business before requesting them to amend the details, or after, or it doesn't matter?

3. My LTSB Current and Natwest Current has a OD limit of 200 and 50 respectively, but in the reports they show up as 0 for both (Credit Limit). Is that correct? (I never really used the overdraft)

Basically my key question is - should I approach the banks first, or should I approach Equifax first?

Also, do I have to ask the banks to correct Equifax only, or ask them to update all the CRAs?

(I tried doing the same with Experian, but failed to get an online report - a few months ago I tried getting the report the 1st time, they asked me to send in some proof of identity which I ignored. Now that I'm trying to view the free report, they said I am a previous customer and I have to login with my past details - after logging in I still get the same proof of identity required. Should I bother?)

Thanks!

if the experian has a freephone number, then a phone call to discuss it and cancel the free trail can be made, then with a printout of the report, if they say that they only tell it as it is, then you could contact the banks to find out why it is not as it should be.

Probably just the banks not passing data to the firms, and only updated every 12 months or so.

    Thanks for your reply.

My bank details have been last updated on 18/10/07, according to Equifax.

My real question is, should I start the dispute first with contacting Natwest (ask them to correct the account number), or should I start by contacting Equifax? Also, if contacting the bank, will a normal 'walk in to the bank' suffice, or do I have to do it in writing?

    Thanks.

    Hi

None of the information you have mentioned is detrimental to your credit file, and will probably be automatically adjusted over time anyway.

However if you would feel more comfortable getting it corrected, write to the CRA concerned first. They quite often contact the bank on your behalf or may refer you to write to the 'data subscriber' and give you the relevant contact details. All CRA's will be updated by your bank - you do not need to write to all three.

Experian quite often ask for confirmation of ID for a first report or if you haven't had one for a while. I'd do it because Experian are used by almost ALL major banks / financial institutions and their reports are very comprehensive and can include information not shown on you Equifax and Call Credit files.

    Hope I've answered you questions!

    Regards

Lenders update information about open credit accounts every month.

Good idea to check your Experian credit report as UNDERGROUND says.

If there is a problem with the information on your credit report, contact the credit agency. They will contact the various other companies to ascertain the correct details. No need to contact your banks etc.

You can report problems via the Equifax website or by phone. The website is better because it is not an 0870 number and you get the call logged and can check the status online.
