I have heard from other people in the trade that more and more LA BCO's are declining the installation of wood burners and sending them to HETAS. Others are charging almost as much as they would for an extension.
Could be they are worried about the house burning down, or someone suffering from CO poisioning.

Isnt that the whole point of building control in the first place, to ensure that work is up to a standard that means the risk of this is low.

Carbon monoxide alarms are mandatory for any new installation, so if one isn't fitted withing the correct area, it won't get signed off.
That true, although they need replacing every 5 years or so.

It should be, but some BCO's don't feel they have the knowledge for this, so rely on HETAS.
The most difficult part is when someone uses the original flue and a register plate instead of an S/S liner.

    It doesnt

We done a self install and the council signed it off. Indeed Hetas have no jurisdiction in Scotland or Northern Ireland
Good news that your local council would sign it off.

I was in this situation last year. My local council Building control would not sign off a chimney and stove, and tried all the local independant BC who said the same.
    Hence I had two options,
    - Hire a HETAS installer
    - DIY chimney repair and SS flue install, then ignore Building Control, installing stove after sign-off.

Interesting to hear the situation is different in other areas.

They have no option, no HETAS here

Actually most people only bother with BC once they decide they are going to sell the property and get it signed off then

There is always the risk that an insurance company may refuse to pay out on a claim. With reduced margins, they will pick on any excuse.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

We rang our insurance company to let them know we were installing a stove and they weren't interested in the slightest

I think a lot of comments like those are old wives tales, like needing to get a certificate from a sweep to prove its been swept

Anyone can buy rods and set themselves up as a sweep, doesnt mean they are any good at it so what point is a certificate? Esp if the house goes up in smoke anyways

Same as HETAS, anyone can pay their money and become registered. HETAS won't cover their work, time and time again over the years on here we have had people with bodged installations by HETAS installers and they have had no comeback at all
